KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A pair of home runs from Lexi Overstreet powered No. 12 Tennessee to a 9-0 win over Furman on Wednesday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Volunteers (34-11) tied a season high with three homers on the night to remain unbeaten at home. UT boasts the top home record in the NCAA at 18-0 and have now won 10 of those 18 games by run-rule.
Overstreet went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and tallied her 10th and 11th home runs of the year while freshman Brooke Vines chipped in with her second-career round tripper as well. Scarlet McSwain also had a solid game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
After two scoreless innings the Vols smashed two homers and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third to break the game open. Tennessee opened the scoring with a two-run blast by Overstreet and continued to pour it on with a sacrifice fly from Rainey Gaffin and a two-run double from Aubrey Leach. Vines capped off the inning with another two-run homer to give Tennessee a 7-0 lead.
The Big Orange played more long ball in the fourth inning as Overstreet launched a solo shot to right-center field for her second home run of the night to increase the lead to eight. Shaliyah Geathers recorded an RBI single in her only at-bat of the evening to make it 9-0 and finish off the scoring.
Erin Gabriel struck out seven batters and allowed only two hits in four scoreless innings to earn her 16th win of the season while Gaffin tossed a scoreless fifth inning to close out the game. Lindsey Bert was the losing pitcher for Furman (24-24) after giving up seven runs on seven hits in only 2.2 innings pitched.
Tennessee will take a break from SEC play this weekend but will welcome Big 12 power No. 9 Oklahoma along with in-state foe Lipscomb to Lee Stadium for the Tennessee Classic over the weekend. Saturday's contest against the Sooners will air live on ESPN at 2 p.m. Fans can also listen to the game on WNML AM 990.
