KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 12 Tennessee had its undefeated run at home come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 loss to No. 9 Oklahoma in front of a sellout crowd of 1,764 at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Volunteers (34-12) entered the game with an NCAA best 18-0 home record but struggled against Sooners' ace Paige Parker, who struck out seven batters and allowed only five hits in her ninth shutout of the season. UT also struggled in the field, tying a season high with four errors on the afternoon.
Aubrey Leach and Rainey Gaffin combined for four of Tennessee's five hits in the game and were the only two UT players to make it past first base. Erin Gabriel fell to 16-5 on the year after giving up three runs on four hits in only two innings pitched.
The Vols were feet away from taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lexi Overstreet gave one a ride to deep right field, but it was caught on the warning track to end the inning. The Sooners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a Nicole Pendley home run to center field.
Oklahoma (36-7) extended its lead to five with another pair of runs in the top of the third. Erin Miller led off the frame with a double and scored two batters later on a double by Shay Knighten. Fale Aviu drove Knighten in later in the inning with a single to left center, increasing the OU lead to 5-0.
A pair of Tennessee errors aided the Sooners' offense in the fourth as they added another run on an RBI groundout by Sydney Romero to go up 6-0. Romero singled in her second run of game in the sixth and Oklahoma capped off the scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 9-0.
The Vols will look to bounce back tomorrow as they wrap up play at the Tennessee Classic against Lipscomb at 2:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on WNML AM 990.
