Vols Competing at Florida Relays, Stanford Invite
March 31, 2016 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track and field is back in action this week with Vols competing in both the Pepsi Florida Relays and the Stanford Invitational.
This first weekend of April marks the debut for several of UT's stars in the sprints, distance events and throws.
SEC Network and WatchESPN (online) will have live coverage of the Pepsi Florida Relays. Friday's live coverage stretches from noon to 4:30 p.m. ET. Saturday's live coverage is from 2:30-7:30 p.m. ET.
"We will be ready to roll this weekend," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford Sullivan said. "We have both Christian Coleman and Felicia Brown opening up in the 100 meters, which everybody is anticipating and excited about. We have the 4x200 running and both the men's and women's 4x100s will open up. We will run a 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 down at the Florida Relays. I am excited to see how our 4x100s go. We have some high-caliber 4x100 squads."
UT was originally scheduled to have student-athletes compete in the Texas Relays as well, but the team decided to have the athletes who would have headed to Austin compete at the Stanford Invitational instead.
Coleman and Felicia Brown, who were the 2016 NCAA indoor champions in their respective 200 meters, will look build off of their strong momentum from a successful indoor season. Coleman, Brown and UT's sprint stars will take on some tough competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium from Thursday through Saturday.
Several of the Vols' distance stars and top throwers are on the West Coast for the Stanford Invitational. Chelsea Blaase, who earned All-America honors after finishing third in the 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships, makes her outdoor season debut, as will fellow All-American Cameron Brown. Brown, who placed third in the weight throw at NCAA Indoors, returns for his favorite event, the hammer throw.
"You are going to see a great effort out of Chelsea in the 10,000 meters this weekend," Sullivan said. "She is very prepped, primed and ready to go. This is the best she will get in terms of competition and environment in this early season. Both she and Austin Whitelaw are ready to go."
