Vols Complete Weekend Sweep
February 28, 2016 | Women's Tennis
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team won its second match of the weekend with a victory over Florida Gulf Coast, 5-2, at the FGCU Tennis Complex Sunday.
In their final weekend of non-conference matches of the spring, the Vols (6-4) lost the doubles point to the Eagles (4-5), but UT rebounded to win five of the matches in singles to take the match over FGCU. It was the first time this season Tennessee won the match after dropping the doubles point.
In doubles, junior Eve Repic and freshman Sadie Hammond were the lone duo to win a match, beating Breana Stampfli and Joselyn Treyes Albarracin, 6-2, on Court 1.
The Volunteers bounced back in singles, though. Junior Brittany Lindl continued her dominating spring by beating Laura Falceto Font, 6-0, 6-2, on Court 5. Lindl is 7-2 on the season when playing in the No. 5 spot for singles. Freshman Kim Kermet gave the Vols a 2-1 lead over Florida Gulf Coast with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Julia Ascúa on Court 3.
Freshman Mary Caroline Meredith fought back after dropping the first set to down Elizabeth Means, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Hammond clinched the match for Tennessee in a back-and-forth 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Stampfli on Court 1. Repic would also pick up a win in three sets, outlasting Treyes Albarracin, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The Volunteers will begin conference play next weekend, starting with a trip to Starkville to face No. 25 Mississippi State at 4 p.m. ET Friday at A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
