Vols' Late Surge Falls Short in 4-3 Loss

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A late push by the Tennessee women’s tennis team after dropping the doubles point wasn’t enough, as the No. 59 Volunteers fell, 4-3, to 63rd-ranked Indiana at IU Tennis Center Sunday.
Despite Tennessee (4-3) winning three matches in singles and forcing a third set on Court 6 to decide the match, the Hoosiers (6-1) held off the Vols’ surge in singles to pick up the victory.
Freshmen Kim Kermet and Mary Caroline Meredith picked up the lone win for UT in singles, defeating the duo of Kim Schmider and Sarah Baron, 6-2, on Court 2.
After going down 2-0 early, Tennessee tried to make a push in singles to take the match. Freshman Sadie Hammond won her fifth consecutive match after beating Madison Appel, 6-2, 6-4, on Court 1. Kermet tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Paula Gutierrez. Junior Eve Repic continued the momentum for the Vols, giving UT a 3-2 lead after edging Stephanie Smith, 6-4, 6-3, on Court 4.
The Hoosiers would not give up, though, as junior Brittany Lindl lost to Natalie Whalen in a second set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (3), on Court 5. The match came down to Court 6 between UT’s Gabby Schuck and IU’s Danielle Wolf.
Wolf took the first set 6-2, but Schuck would respond by winning the second set 6-2. After Wolf went up 5-3, Schuck brought the match to 5-4 and had the final game at 40-40 to tie things at 5-5, but Wolf bested Schuck, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to give the Indiana its sixth win of the season.
The Vols will return to action next Saturday as the team travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes at Varsity Tennis Center at noon.
