February 13, 2016 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Christian Coleman and Felicia Brown won their respective 200 meters with outstanding performances on Saturday as Tennessee concluded a successful weekend at the Tyson Invitational.
UT posted four wins (three by the men, one by the women) and 11 top-five finishes (six by the men, five by the women) over two days of competition at Randal Tyson Track Complex.
"I think we had a tremendous weekend," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford Sullivan said. "Everyone here in Seattle and everyone out in Arkansas capitalized on the opportunity to compete and take it up another level. We certainly saw that from everybody that competed. They really stepped up their game and put themselves right in the thick of things. I'm very very pleased and excited that everybody is healthy and everybody is motivated and certainly producing at a great level going into our conference championships in two weeks."
Coleman had the best weekend for Tennessee. After winning the 60 meters on Friday with a blazing 6.55 time in the finals, Coleman raced to a new PR in the 200 meters on Saturday, winning in 20.59.
Brown set a new Tennessee record in the 200 meters, winning on Saturday with an incredible time of 22.81. That mark currently ranks second in the nation. Brown enjoyed a strong weekend at the Tyson Invitational. On Friday she took eighth in the 60-meter finals.
UT wrapped competition at the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle with a pair of PRs. Austin Whitelaw posted a career-best time in the 3,000 meters on Saturday, clocking in at 8:04.51. Tyler Woodrome added a personal best in the mile, running a 4:10.50.
Tennessee Men
Coleman's 20.59 in the 200 meters ranks third in the nation and fourth in UT history. It is Tennessee's fastest 200-meter time since Rubin Williams set the school record of 20.36 in 2008.
Nathan Strother added another PR on Saturday, clocking a 21.57 in the 200-meter college division to place 15th. On Friday, Strother ran a personal-best 46.25 in the 400-meter invitational race.
Wesley Edwards took fifth place in the high jump, clearing 2.06m (6-9.00).
Whitelaw's 8:04.51 time in the 3,000 meters at the Husky Classic ranks as the seventh-fastest time in Tennessee history and the best since Zach Sabatino ran an 8:00.65 (second-best in UT history) in 2006.
Tennessee Women
Brown's 22.81 in the 200 meters broke the UT record she previously set at
Kristen Denk set a new UT freshman record and personal best by clearing a 4.15m (13-7.25) in the pole vault to take second place. That mark is Denk's college PR. Her personal best is 4.18m, which she cleared as a high school senior at the 2015 New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York.
Cassie Wertman threw a season-best 16.95 meters (55-7.50) in the shot put to finish fourth.
