BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tennessee and Indiana renewed a rivalry that dates back to 1980 when the Vols faced the Hoosiers in Saturday's 21st Indiana-Tennessee dual at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The Tennessee women and the Indiana women tied at 61-61. The UT men fell to the Hoosiers, 66-47.
"For us in the early season, we were looking for the competition and our athletes brought the competition," Tennessee director of track and field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We made a lot of mistakes but we made a lot of breakthroughs too. I couldn't be more pleased, but at the same time, I think it is good to stay a little bit hungry since we are just starting out."
After the dual, Indiana hosted a team dinner for the Tennessee team and its staff.
Tennessee Men
The Tennessee men posted seven wins. Christian Coleman led the way, winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.68 and winning the 200-meter dash in a personal record and facility record 21.04.
Nathan Strother clocked a 47.57 to win the 400m.
Austin Whitelaw won the 3,000 meters, clocking in at 8:18.09.
The UT 4x400 relay of Ari Cogdell, Coleman, Darryl Harris and Strother cruised to a first-place showing in a meet-record time of 3:12.31.
All-American pole vaulter Jake Blankenship made his season debut and cleared 5.45 meters to take first place.
Cameron Brown won the weight throw with a distance of 22.32 meters.
"We came in here to battle and it was definitely a battle," Sullivan said. "It was one of those meets where it went back and forth, back and forth all the way through. The Indiana guys pulled up on us early and we weren't able to close the gap. But I think if we were to come back here in another two or three weeks, the Tennessee men would have this one in hand."
Tennessee Women
The Tennessee women had seven wins as well, dominating the sprints. Kali Davis-White took the 60m with a time of 7.48. Felicia Brown set a personal, meet and facility record when she won the 200m in 23.20. Felecia Majors set a meet record when she clocked a 54.00 in the 400m.
Cidae'a Woods had two first-place showings and two second place showings. She won the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.90 and the long jump with a leap of 5.98 meters. Woods was second in the high jump (1.69 meters) and second in the triple jump (12.20 meters).
Cassie Wertman won the shot put with a throw of 15.77 meters.
Kristen Denk set a new Tennessee freshman record in the pole vault, clearing 3.97 meters to take second place.
All-American Chelsea Blaase did not run on Saturday as she recovers from a chest cold. She is scheduled to make her season debut later this month.
"On the ladies' side, we did not run All-American Chelsea Blaase," Sullivan said. "We are taking it a little bit slower with her after a long fall and she has been sick all week. So we lost some points right off the bat without racing her, but the women fought it out and it ends up in a tie."
