Vols Fall in Season Opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women’s tennis team (0-1) fell in its season opener 4-3 to No. 71 Wake Forest (3-0) at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Saturday.
“It was a match against another good team,” co-head coach Mike Patrick said following the match. “They are much improved over the past year like we are. We came up just a little bit short. We still have a lot to learn. We are seeing some people starting to breakthrough.”
In doubles, freshmen Kim Kermet and Ashley Bongart breezed past the duo of Emma Davis and Samantha Asch, 6-1. Freshman Sadie Hammond and junior Eve Repic clinched the doubles point after defeating Anna Ulyashchenko and Kimmy Guerin, 6-4, giving the Vols a 1-0 lead.
An additional doubles match was played between freshmen Mary Caroline Meredith and Gabby Schuck and the team of Courtney Meredith, Mary Caroline’s older sister, and Kasey Gardiner. Meredith and Schuck won 6-2.
In singles, junior Brittany Lindl went down to the wire with Luisa Fernandez in a tight match. Both sets went to tiebreakers, but it was Lindl who edged out the match, winning 7-6 (3), 7-6 (9). Kermet completed a come-from-behind victory over Anna Ulyashchenko after nearly being shutout in the first set. She fought back in the second and third sets to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
With Sunday’s matches being cancelled due to weather, the Vols will be back in action on Jan. 30, 2016, facing Western Michigan and UT-Martin in a doubleheader at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
