Vols Sweep Skyhawks and Broncos
January 30, 2016 | Women's Tennis

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers (2-1) picked up their first two wins of the season in 7-0 sweeps over UT-Martin and Western Michigan on Saturday at Goodfriend Tennis Center in the first of two doubleheaders during the weekend.
In doubles against UT-Martin, senior Tiffany Tavares and junior Ashlee Boles paired up for the first time in their career. They defeated the duo of Andrea Plantada Cortes and Asel Jumamukhambetova, 6-4, on court 3.
After freshmen Kim Kermet and Mary Caroline Meredith were barely edged out on court 2, freshman Sadie Hammond and junior Eve Repic forced a tiebreaker on court 1 with Jemima Potter and Sarah Candeloro. The Vols took an early lead in the tiebreaker and never looked back, winning the match 7-6 (5) and clinching the doubles point to give Tennessee a 1-0 lead.
In singles, junior Brittany Lindl and Repic both completed 6-0, 6-0 sweeps against their opponents to give UT a quick 3-0 lead over the Skyhawks. Meredith, who made her first start in the singles lineup, clinched the match for the Vols on court 3, beating Burcu Tari 6-3, 6-2.
Tavares and Kermet both picked up victories shortly after the match was clinched. Hammond held off a late push by Sarah Candeloro on court 1 to complete the 7-0 sweep over UT-Martin with 6-4, 7-5 win.
The Vols quickly took the doubles point against Western Michigan with Lindl and Tavares teaming up to blank the duo of Ashby and Azcui, 6-0, on court 3. UT clinched the doubles point with Kermet and Meredith getting the 6-2 win over Eristavi and Fevralev on court 2.
In singles, Hammond and Meredith extended UT's lead with wins on courts 1 and 3 in two sets. Kermet then clinched the match for Tennessee, beating Olivia Myers, 6-1, 6-2, on court 2. Tennessee would go on to sweep on the remaining courts, giving the Vols a perfect record in singles on the day.
Tennessee will be back in action tomorrow, as it travels to McCallie High School in Chattanooga to face Lipscomb (2 p.m.) and Chattanooga (6 p.m.) in a doubleheader after missing those matches last weekend due to inclement weather.
