BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Tennessee women's cross country teams opened its 2015 season on Friday with a second-place team finish at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invite at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course. Lightning in the area halted and ultimately cancelled the men's race.
Tennessee's women scored 50 points and took second in the 4K with five runners earning points inside the top 14. Freshman Jessica Rizor led the group with an 11th place finish in a time of 14:30.90 (7 points) and fellow freshman Abby McCulla was right behind her, taking 12th with a time of 14:31.61 (8 points). Freshman Peighton Meske took 16th (14:55.33, 10 points) and freshman Emma Reed placed 17th (14:57.74, 11 points). Senior Caroline Duer rounded out the group in 25th place (15:17.87, 14 points).
North Carolina took first place with 15 points. All but two of Virginia Tech's runners ran unattached.
The UT men were enjoying a strong 6K race before lightning cancelled it at 2K.
The teams next compete on Sept. 19 with the Commodore Classic in Nashville.
