RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Tennessee Volunteers opened their final non-conference tournament of the volleyball season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12) victory over Hampton on Friday at the NC State DoubleTree Cary Classic at the Carmichael Gym.
Behind a team-leading nine kills by Bri Holmes and 12 team aces, the Vols (13-0) are off to their best start to a season in the NCAA era.
The Vols continue play Saturday against Campbell at 10 a.m. and host NC State at 7 p.m. The matches serve as the finale of non-conference play for Tennessee before the SEC season starts next week.
Tennessee recorded 12 aces in the match, a season best. Freshman defensive specialist Brooke Schumacher recorded four to lead the Vols. Six different players had at least one ace. It was the most aces in the three-set match for Tennessee since recording 16 against Appalachian State in 2007. The 12 aces ties for the third-most aces in a match in the rally scoring era at Tennessee.
Thirteen players took the court for the Vols. Seven players had at least one kill, and 10 had one dig or more. Schumacher played her second set of the season at libero, finishing the match at the position.
The Vols kept up their hitting percentage through all the personnel changes on court. Tennessee hit .400 as a team while holding Hampton to -0.27. It was the fifth time the Vols have held an opponent to below .100 hitting this season.
Tennessee opened the match with a 8-0 lead on Dempsey's serve and never looked back. Treiber led the Vols with five kills to go along with two blocks. The Vols led by as many as 15 points in the set when the team took a 24-9 lead on an attack error by the Pirates. Tennessee outhit Hampton in the set, .550 to -.034
The Vols put a new-look lineup on the court for the second set, including setter Taylor Johnson making her season debut and Kayleigh Moody making the starting lineup in the set. Tennessee took a 6-5 lead on a kill by Bri Holmes and led the rest of the set.
Johnson served three aces in the set, her third putting the Vols ahead 16-7. That was during an 8-0 run in which Tennessee surged ahead 18-7. The Vols won the set 25-15.
Tennessee pulled away in the third set on a 7-0 run, taking a 15-7 lead on an ace by Schumacher. Nora Reed closed the set and match at 25-12 with a shot Hampton's blockers could not handle.
