WGCA All-America Honorable Mention for Newell Sisters
May 29, 2015 | Women's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Both AJ and Anna Newell were named 2014-15 Women's Golf Coach Association (WGCA) Honorable Mention All-Americans on Friday afternoon. The Newell sisters become the 11th and 12th Lady Vols to earn an All-American nod.
"I'm so happy for AJ and Anna both being named All-Americans," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "Anna had a steady solid freshman year and this award is proof of that. AJ had a great senior year and her top 10 finish at the NCAA Championship assured her of this honor. It's very unique to have two sisters from the same team earn the award! The Newells must be very proud."
It was a career year for the eldest Newell. Senior AJ Newell ended her collegiate career with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships. She also earned her first ever collegiate win at the Westbrook Spring Invitational earlier this season.
Over her four-year career, Newell was named twice to the SEC Community Service Team and earned SEC All-Freshman accolades as well as SEC Player of the Week.
Freshman Anna Newell finished in a tie for 34th place at the NCAA Championships. In her freshman campaign, Newell carded four top 10 finishes, including a runner-up finish. Like her sister, she was named to the SEC All-Freshman team and also made the All-SEC Second Team roster.
Today, both sisters competed in a U.S. Women's Open Qualifier at Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Anna posted 147 (+3), while AJ carded 148 (+4).
