GRANBURY, Texas – The No. 9 Tennessee women's golf team concluded the Fall season on a high note on Wednesday, securing a tie for second place at the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate.
The Lady Vols carded a 5-under-par 283 in round three at Halbert National to improve to a 14-under-par 54-hole finish. A strong finish saw Tennessee tally eight countable birdies and an eagle across the final four holes. No. 8 Oregon claimed the team title with a dominant 28-under-par performance, while No. 15 Arizona State split runner-up honors with Tennessee to round out the top three.
All five Lady Vols in the lineup earned top-15 individual finishes among the field of 48, a balanced team effort.
After posting scores over par in the opening two rounds, Kyra Van Kan stepped up when the Lady Vols needed her most. The junior fired a 4-under-par 68 in round three to lead Tennessee, rolling in six birdies on the day. It marks Van Kan's third round of the season in the 60s as she closed the tournament tied for 11th place at 1-under-par.
Sophie Christopher wrapped up an impressive Fall season with a tie for seventh place, clinching her fourth top-10 finish in four appearances. The junior turned in an even-par 72 in round three, her third consecutive round of par or better in the event, to close at 4-under-par. After a difficult start to the day in which she shot a 39 on the front nine, Christopher clawed back with three birdies on her final four holes.
Madison Messimer had a strong finish to the week with a 1-under-par 71 in round three. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Year possessed one of the cleaner scorecards on the course, marking just two bogeys on the day. At 1-under-par overall, Messimer concluded the tournament tied for 11th place.
Sofie Engesæth had the final countable score for Tennessee in round three, an even-par 72. After shooting 4-over-par through her opening 11 holes, the senior fought back by going 4-under-par over her final four holes, including an eagle on hole No. 18. With an even-par 54-hole finish, Engesæth tied for 14th place.
Despite not recording a countable score in round three, Martina Lopez-Lancheres earned her best finish of the Fall at the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate. The senior from San Sebastian, Spain, posted a 1-over-par 73 in the third round to close the tournament at 1-under-par, tied for 11th place alongside Van Kan and Messimer.
Tennessee has now concluded its four-tournament Fall schedule. The Lady Vols will pause for the Winter before teeing off the Spring season at the FAU Paradise Invitational, Feb. 1-3, a tournament the team won last Spring.
