AUSTIN, Texas -- Tyler Porter recorded a new career-best in the pole vault and Tavis Bailey continued his strong start to the outdoor season as Tennessee Track and Field opened its weekend in the Lone Star State at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational.
Porter and Bailey each finished runner-up in their respective events, the former placing second in Section B of the men's pole vault at the Texas Relays. The redshirt senior recorded a new personal-best vault of 17 feet, 8.5 inches (5.40 meters) as he matched his previous career-best finish.
Teammate Michael Maira, also competing in the pole vault, did not record a height in the competition.
Meanwhile, competing in nearby San Marcos on the campus of Texas State University, Bailey took part in the discus competition at the Bobcat Invitational. Bailey finished runner-up in the field of 36 with a throw of 192 feet, eight inches (58.74 meters). For the second week in a row, Bailey used a non-reverse throwing motion throughout competition, but is expected to return to a full throw when he takes part in the discus throw on Friday at the Texas Relays.
Alongside Bailey, freshman Matthew Zajac placed seventh in the event with an effort of 176 feet, four inches (53.75). It was the second consecutive seventh-place finish to open the season for Zajac as he finished in the same spot at last week's John Mitchell Alabama Relays.
At the time of publishing, final results from the Texas Relays were unavailable. Stay tuned to UTSports.com for updates on Maira and Porter in the pole vault.
Three more events await the Volunteers on Friday in Austin. Erin Champion leads off the day in the women's pole vault at 11 a.m. ET and will be followed by the men's javelin and Kyle Quinn at 12:30. Bailey rounds out the day in the men's discus at 5 p.m.
