Women's Golf Claims First Place On Day One

PEORIA, Ariz. -- With wind gusts reaching up to 20 mph and temperatures in the high 60s, the Lady Vols dominated the field during the first day of competition at the Westbrook Spring Invitational at Vistas Course (par 72, 6,269 yards). Tennessee finished in first place with scores of 279 and 289.
Tennessee's first round of 279 (-9) ranks fourth best in the tourney records. The 54-hole total of 568 (-8) is the second best in Westbrook Spring Invitational history. UT was one of three schools to shoot under par in the first round and one of two to finish the day under par. Three Lady Vols tied for third place and four finished in the top-25.
"Today was a great day to start the spring season," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The first 18 holes we made very few mistakes, and it was just a fun round. The second 18 were a lot tougher due to the wind and a little fatigue. They really finished strong and made some birdies coming in to save the round."
AJ Newell's first round of four-under 68, which included five birdies and one bogey, ties for the 10th best score in the tourney record books. In the second round, she shot one-over for a score of 73 and finished the day in a tie for third place.
Alongside AJ Newell, Lucia Polo also finished in third place. Polo shot under par in both rounds starting with a 71 and improving by a stroke in the second round with a score of 70.Freshman Anna Newell shot three-under 69 in the first round and finished at par (72) in the second round.
Hannah Pietila finished the day in a six-way tie for 24th place. She shot one-under 71 in the first round but was three-over in the second round with a score of 75. Emmie Pietila rounded it out for the Lady Vols with scores of 76 and 74, respectively. Emmie Pietila finished the day in a tie for 53rd place.
The third and final round of the Westbrook Invitational will begin Monday, Feb. 23 at 8:30 a.m. MT/10:30 a.m. ET with a shotgun start. Live results can be found on GolfStat.
