Women's Tennis Falls to #42 Indiana

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Vols suffered their third consecutive loss after dropping a 6-1 match to #42 Indiana at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee started out cold in doubles as the team of sophomore Victoria Olivarez and junior Tiffany Tavares fell to Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy 8-6. Sophomores Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont lost their third match in a row after winning eight straight. They fell to the duo of Kim Schmider and Alecia Kauss 8-5, clinching the doubles point for the Hoosiers.
In singles, the tough stretch continued as the momentum quickly shifted towards Indiana's favor. Just moments after beginning, Guevremont had to retire from the match, giving Indiana a quick 2-0 lead on the Volunteers. The favor was returned later in the match, though, as Olivarez won the only point for the Lady Vols after Shannon Murdy retired.
Senior Joanna Henderson, sophomore Ashlee Boles and Repic all saw their comeback attempts cut short with losses in the third set to their opponents. Henderson and Boles both jumped out to early leads by winning their first set, but Indiana came back with strong second and third sets. Repic lost her first set 6-0 and then won the second 6-1, but time and stamina began to take their toll as she lost in the third set to clinch the match for Indiana at 4-0.
Junior Tiffany Tavares came close to forcing a third set after losing her first, but Indiana's Stephanie Smith won five straight games to win the match 6-2, 7-5.
"We were really up and down, today," co-head coach Mike Patrick said after the match. "I think a lot of that has to do with injuries. They know the odds are stacked against them, so it gets tough out there. We competed well and gave ourselves chances in a lot of matches, but we weren't able to completely focus on our individual matches."
Tennessee will be back in action on Sunday as they compete in a doubleheader against Chattanooga at 11 a.m. and Belmont at 3 p.m. at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"We need everyone to play a good match," Patrick said about what his team needs to do tomorrow. "We need to figure out how to win again. We have a lot of chances to do stuff, but it is hard because we are down a few people. We don't have anyone left, so everyone is playing dinged up. Our challenge is how we handle that."
