W Tennis Sweeps UTC and Belmont

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Vols snapped their three-match skid with a doubleheader sweep Sunday against the Chattanooga Mocs 4-3 and Belmont Bruins 6-1 at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Senior Joanna Henderson, junior Tiffany Tavares and sophomore Eve Repic all came away from the day 2-0 in singles. Tavares' first win came at a crucial moment for the Lady Vols.
The UTC match came down to the wire as the teams were even at 3-3 with Tavares still playing in a tight third set against Samantha Caswell.
Tied at 4-4, Tavares was able to break serve to make it 5-4. She won the match on her serve after Caswell hit a couple of balls in the net and hit one out to end the match. The win for Tavares clinched the victory for Tennessee.
"Clinching the match is always something really special," Tavares said about her win. "It comes down to you, and you know that your team needs you. That is always a special feeling. I think I did a good job of taking it point by point."
In their second match on the day, the Lady Vols wasted no time picking up their eighth win of the season.
In doubles, Henderson and fellow senior Caitlyn Williams both won their two matches on the day by beating UTC's Samantha Caswell and Kayla Jones 6-2 and Belmont's Kendall Warren and Lindsey Whitehead 6-1. Repic and sophomore Victoria Olivarez also won their two matches throughout the day for the Volunteers. They defeated the duos of Kaylene Chadwell and Kelsey Coots from UTC as well as Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Abbie Mather from Belmont 6-0 each.
In singles, the Lady Vols secured victories on each court besides court 6, which Tennessee had to forfeit in both matches due to a lack of available players.
"The thing that is frustrating is that a lot of it's out of our control," co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said about getting players back from injuries. "It is just going to take some time. Our medical staff is doing a great job of trying to get everyone healthy and ready to go, but there are some things you just can't control."
Olivarez and sophomore Ashlee Boles both picked up wins against Belmont after dropping their first against Chattanooga. Boles beat Suzanna Stapler 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Olivarez defeated Kendall Warren 6-2, 6-2.
"They did well," Hahn-Patrick said about the team's performance. "It is always hard to compete in a doubleheader. They did a great job of coming back this morning with the adversity they have been dealt. We are glad the weekend is over."
The Volunteers will begin Southeastern Conference play next weekend as they face Texas A&M at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Friday at 4 p.m.
