Soccer Leads Early But Falls At #2 UVa, 2-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Hannah Wilkinson headed in a goal in the 10th minute and Tennessee led No. 2 Virginia at halftime, but UT came up short in a 2-1 loss after two second-half Cavalier goals on Friday.
Tennessee (3-3-0) struck first in the 10th minute when Wilkinson headed in a goal near the right post off a beautiful free kick from Kiah Allen. Allen served the ball in from about five yards outside the box on the left side. Wilkinson and Amy Neal skied for the ball and Wilkinson found the back of the net for the fourth time this season and the 17th time in her career.
Virginia (6-0-0) had a 23-10 advantage on shots in the game. Tennessee was called on 15 fouls compared to eight for the Cavaliers.
In the 18th minute, Tennessee was called for a foul outside the left side of the box. On the free kick, UT was called for another foul in the box, giving UVa a penalty kick. Danielle Colaprico took the PK for the Cavaliers and sent a shot wide left.
In the 20th minute, Tennessee goalkeeper Jamie Simmons made a great save diving to her right to turn away a shot by Kaili Torres. Simmons (3-3-0) made four saves in the loss.
At the half, Virginia had 11 shots to Tennessee's three and four corner kicks to UT's three. Tennessee was called for eight fouls to UVa's five fouls in the first half.
Tennessee's 1-0 lead marked the first time this season that Virginia had trailed in a game.
UT was aggressive to start the second half as Anna McClung had a header go wide in the first minute out of the break.
Virginia evened the game at 1-1 in the 50th minute when Kristen McNabb scored from the left side of the box. McNabb sent a ball to the right post, low on the ground past a diving Simmons. Brittany Ratcliffe had the assist.
The Cavaliers pulled ahead in the 57th minute when Colaprico scored from the left side of the box, placing the ball near the right post. Alexis Shaffer was on the assist.
UT had a good look at the goal in the 69th minute when Wilkinson broke loose down the left side, crossed the ball over to McClung to draw the keeper out and Carlyn Baldwin fired a shot from outside the box that went high.
Simmons made some big saves in the second half, including an impressive stab to her right to poke away a liner from Colaprico in the 72nd minute. Ratcliff had a shot hit the crossbar seconds later.
Tennessee's best look at a late second-half goal came in the 76th minute when Wilkinson sent a cross in from the right side to Michele Christy, whose header was blocked inside the box. In the 77th minute, Wilkinson had a cross into the box to Cheyenne Spade, but the shot was wide right.
