TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Tennessee soccer suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Friday night at No. 7 Alabama, conceding two second-half goals in a 2-1 loss to the Crimson Tide.
The Lady Vols (6-5-4, 1-5-3) came out of the gates firing, scoring an 18th minute goal to take a 1-0 lead. The goal came from the head of Sophia Prime, the first of her career after Ayva Jordan's long-distance effort was spilled by the Alabama goalkeeper. Jordan was credited with an assist on the play, her second of the season.
The goal was Tennessee's first since Sept. 27, a second-half strike by Ines Derrien in a 3-1 defeat to No. 3 Vanderbilt.
After spending much of the first half on the front foot, the Lady Vols entered the half time break with confidence and a 1-0 lead. The Crimson Tide flipped the script in the second half, out shooting Tennessee 11-1 over the final 45 minutes.
Still, the Tennessee defense stood strong until the 63rd minute, when a flying tackle by Shae O'Rourke in the penalty area resulted in a red card and a penalty kick for Alabama. The Crimson Tide would convert, knotting the match at one goal apiece and quickly seizing momentum.
Alabama would find the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, calmly finishing a one-on-one opportunity into the bottom-left corner.
Despite the defeat, Tennessee goalkeeper Cayden Norris notched a season-high five saves to keep the Lady Vols in the match after being reduced to 10 women.
The Lady Vols have one match remaining in the regular season as they host Oklahoma at Regal Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 1. Tennessee will be searching for a victory plus help from other results to secure a spot in the SEC Tournament.
