Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision To #23 BYU

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 23 BYU posted a 1-0 victory in Tennessee's home opener at Regal Soccer Stadium on Friday night before 1,691 fans. The Cougars secured their first win of the season, standing at 1-0-2. Tennessee falls to 1-2-0.
Elena Madeiros scored the game's lone goal in the 17th minute off a pass from Niki Fernandes. She finished off a feed moving from the right side and scoring inside the left post.
BYU outshot Tennessee, 13-6. Cougars keepers Katherine Snyder (two saves) and Hannah Clark shared the shutout. Jamie Simmons made two saves for Tennessee.
After the BYU goal, Tennessee came back with strong attack in the 19th minute when Anna McClung fired a shot off the right post. McClung had another shot in the 39th minute that was saved by Snyder.
UT had two more good looks late in the second half. With 20 minutes left, Brittney Wade sent a nice ball low through the middle of the box that Amy Neal couldn't settle for a shot. In the 85th minute, Hannah Wilkinson ripped a shot wide left.
The Orange & White return to action next Friday night at Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. The next home match is against Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
