KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- For the second day in a row, freshman defensive lineman Derek Barnett has been recognized for his outstanding season. On Tuesday, Barnett was named to the Coaches All-SEC Second Team after earning a spot on the AP team on Monday.
Barnett is the first Tennessee true freshmen to earn All-SEC accolades since Eric Berry similarly was honored as a second-team selection by the Coaches and Associated Press in 2007.
A Nashville native, Barnett ranked second in the SEC with 20.5 tackles for loss and set the Tennessee record for both tackles for loss and sacks (10.0) by a freshman. His 20.5 tackles for loss are the most by a Vol since John Henderson recorded 21.0 during his Outland Trophy-winning season in 2000. Barnett's 10.0 sacks ranked third in the SEC and he also set a UT freshman record for sacks in a single game, recording three both at No. 3 Ole Miss and at South Carolina.
Barnett, the first true freshman to start the season opener on the defensive line in school history, also recorded 18.0 tackles for loss in conference games, the top mark in the league. He played in all 12 games and ranked fourth on the Vols with 69 tackles, the top mark in the SEC among true freshmen.
The SEC will unveil its All-Freshman team on Thursday.
