Vols Get a Win, Seven PRs at Hoosier Open
December 12, 2014 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Seven Volunteers recorded new personal bests and Cassie Wertman earned her fourth career win in the women's shot put as Tennessee track and field opened the 2014-15 season at the Hoosier Open.
Four of UT's new personal record performances came in the throws while three more were set in the middle distance sprints. One personal best came in the jumps, courtesy of true freshman Cidae'a Woods.
Wertman opened her junior indoor campaign with a victory, finishing atop the women's shot put with a distance of 16.39 meters. It was her fourth career win in the event and she just narrowly missed her career-best mark of 16.43, which she set in last year's indoor season-opener.
Wertman's winning throw stands as the second-best ever recorded at the Hoosier Open.
In the women's sprints, junior Felicia Brown came in third place in the 300 meters behind a career-best time of 38.07. It was just the second time the junior had competed in the event in her time on Rocky Top, and she matched the fifth-best time ever recorded at UT, which was set by teammate Felecia Majors last season.
Majors was also in action on Friday night, competing in the 500m run on Friday night. Her time of 1:13.19 was good enough for second place, and while that time just missed besting her previous career-mark of 1:13.04, she did top the previous Hoosier Open record in the event of 1:13.68.
Shifting to the jumps, freshman Woods finished in third in her first-ever collegiate competition as she set her initial career-mark in the women's long jump with a distance 5.74 meters.
Also recording a third-place finish in the jumps, sophomore Brielynn Rogers posted an 11.93 in the triple jump.
On the men's side, junior Cameron Brown wasted no time settling into a new season as he set a new personal-best in the 35-pound weight throw -- the same event in which he earned second team All-America honors a year ago. Brown finished second in the event, posting the second-best distance ever recorded at Tennessee at 21.52 meters. That distance bests his previous career mark of 21.19m, which he set last season.
Fellow junior Tavis Bailey was third in the weight, also finishing with a new career-best at a distance of 20.51 meters. That mark tops his previous best of 19.99 and gives him the fourth best mark in Tennessee's indoor track and field history.
Both marks from Brown and Bailey easily defeated the previous Hoosier Open record of 18.67 set back in 2011.
A third personal-best emerged from the men's weight competition when junior Carson Frost turned in a 17.12 to secure a new career-mark. Frost finished 15th overall.
Later in the evening, Bailey and senior Matthew Hoty capped a strong showing from the Vols in the throws with finishes of third and fifth, respectively. Bailey's best throw of the night came in the final round at 18.36 meters. Meanwhile, Hoty's fifth-place finish came behind 18.18 in the final round.
In the men's sprints, true freshman Christian Coleman opened up his indoor career with a time of 34.41 in the 300 meters. He came in third place overall.
With the season-opening meet now complete, UT will break from competition for just over three weeks. UT returns to action in the New Year on January 10th at the Orange & Purple Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina.
