KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee used a 14-0 run bridging the halves to run past the University of Pikeville, 80-62, in the first of two exhibition games before 13,135 fans on Monday night. The exhibition marked new Vols' head coach Donnie Tyndall's debut as the head man for the Orange & White. The Vols shot 60.8 from the floor. Tennessee dominated the boards as well with a 40-24 edge.
Tennessee was led by two of its four returning players for the 2014-15 season. Junior Armani Moore topped the Vols with 17 points and seven rebounds while senior Josh Richardson tallied 15 and handed our five assists. Freshman Detrick Mostella netted 11 points with some impressive moves, which brought the Thompson-Boling Arena crowd to its feet.
Eleven different Vols scored in the contest, including seven playing in their first game in front of Vol Nation.
Pikeville, ranked No. 2 in NAIA, was playing its second exhibition against an SEC school in as many days, losing at Kentucky on Sunday. The Bears were led by K.K. Simmons, who had a game-high 30 points, including seven 3-pointers.
Tennessee pulled away in the second half in what was a tight game for much of the first half.
Tennessee took a 20-point lead on a tip-in by Moore with 15 minutes left in the game, making it 55-35. The Vols maintained a lead of at least 15 points for the remainder of the way.
After trailing by as many as nine points, the Vols rallied to take a lead midway through the half and built that to an 11-point advantage at intermission, 42-31. The Vols closed the half on a 10-0 run thanks to a monster jam by Robert Hubbs III and a layup from Moore in the final seconds.
Simmons had 20 points for Pikeville in the first half to lead all scorers as only four Bears scored in the first half. Moore led the Vols with 11 points as Tennessee shot 60 percent from the floor.
The Vols took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Moore with 9:19 left in the first half, putting Tennessee ahead, 19-17.
The Vols fell behind 15-6 on a 3-pointer by Simmons with 13:58 left in the first half.
Tennessee plays its final exhibition game on Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, Nov. 8. That game tips off at 7 p.m., and will air on the SEC Network+ and can be heard on the Vol Network.
