Today's game opened the exhibition portion of Tennessee's 106th season of varsity men's basketball.
First-year head coach Donnie Tyndall is the program's 19th all-time head coach.
Tyndall is Tennessee's third head coach in the last decade.
At 44-years-old, Tyndall is the youngest head men's basketball coach in the SEC.
Eleven players saw action for the Vols in the opening exhibition, including seven newcomers: Devon Baulkman, Willie Carmichael III, Jabari McGhee, Detrick Mostella, Tariq Owens, Kevin Punter and Dominic Woodson.
Mostella paced the newcomers in scoring, putting up 11 points. Woodson had the most rebounds among the new Vols with five.
Gives Tennessee a 10-game win streak in exhibition play.
Improves head coach Donnie Tyndall's record in exhibition games to 14-1.
Gives Tennessee four-year seniors Brandon Lopez and Josh Richardson an unblemished 6-0 career record in exhibition games.
Tennessee's starters: Josh Richardson, Kevin Punter, Robert Hubbs III, Derek Reese and Dominic Woodson.
First in: Armani Moore and Willie Carmichael III were the first to check into the game.
In all, 11 players got court time for the Vols.
Tennessee benefitted from consistent shooting late in the first half and into the second, making eight consecutive field goals.
Detrick Mostella started with a layup in the paint at the 1:53 mark before halftime and Derek Reese finished the stretch with a layup with 17:31 in the second half.
Reese's bucket gave the Vols a 50-33 lead.
Thanks to a strong-shooting performance by K.K. Simmons, Pikeville built an early lead. The Bears led by nine points when Simmons made a 3-pointer with 13:58 left in the half.
From that point, the Vols answered with a 15-2 run.
The streak ended with a jumper by Tariq Owens to make it 21-17.
Pikeville retook the lead and the game was tied once before Jabari McGhee put the Vols ahead for good with a layup to make it 28-26 with 3:44 remaining in the half.
Simmons made 20 points in the first half with five 3-pointers. He finished with a game-high 30.
Moore led the Vols with 11 points at the half.

Josh Richardson - 15
Detrick Mostella - 11
K.K. Simmons was the only player for Pikeville to finish in double figures, putting up a game-high 30.
