Blaase Runner-Up for Third Straight Race
October 04, 2014 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Chelsea Blaase continued her strong fall season by recording a silver-medal finish for the third consecutive race, this time finishing second at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday. One of the largest collegiate races in the country, Blaase came in second at the Classic amidst a field of 300 runners. She was edged only by Sarah Disanza of No. 16 Wisconsin.
Blaase finished the 5K race in a time of 16:51.54, a little more than seven seconds off her personal best time in the event, established three weeks ago when she came in second at the Bluegrass Invitational. She was followed by fellow junior Alexis Panisse, who came in 37th at 17:47.51.
With a team of only four runners, the UT women did not qualify for a result in the team standings on Saturday.
The 16th-ranked Badgers claimed the 5K as a team as Blaase was the only runner to finish in the top four not wearing the UW cardinal and white.
Meanwhile, the Tennessee men's squad, racing in the 8K, was paced by Kyle Walter's 25:00.33. The best 8K time of the season for the junior, Walter finished the day in 50th place.
Austin Whitelaw came in right on the heels of Walter, posting a time of 25:00.87. Jack Little (77th, 25:22.51), J.R. Creekmore (94th, 25:30.91), and Jeremy Dickie (137th, 25:51.95) rounded out the scoring for the Tennessee men which finished 14th in a field of 28 totaling 250 athletes.
UT will break from competition next week, but returns to action on Friday, Oct. 17 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That race is the final tune up for UT before the SEC Championships which take place on Oct. 31.
