October 27, 2014 | Baseball

On Friday, October 24, 2014, University of Tennessee alumnus and former Brooklyn Dodger Ezra Malachi "Pat" McGlothin passed away in Knoxville, Tenn., just days following his 94th birthday.
A veteran of World War II, McGlothin served two stints with the Dodgers, making a total of eight relief appearances from 1949-50. Prior to his big league call up, the Tennessee native enjoyed a successful minor league career as a pitcher. In 1944, McGlothin had the opportunity to play for the Corpus Christi NATB team against future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams. In one September matchup during the 1944 season, McGlothin went the distance in a big way for his Corpus Christi team and worked through 19 innings, tossing more than 200 pitches en route to a win over Pensacola.
Over the course of his professional and minor league baseball days, McGlothin played against and alongside numerous players who went on to become legends of the sport, including Williams and Jackie Robinson.
Following his playing career, McGlothin became a manager of the nearby Knoxville Smokies. In 1954, he retired from baseball and began selling insurance in the Knoxville area. Over the next 60 years, McGlothin enjoyed a successful insurance career and held the position of CEO of Mutual Insurance Agency until the time of his passing.
