Secret City Head Race
UT Wins 10 Medals At Secret City Head Race

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee rowing team took to the water on Saturday for the 2014 Secret City Head Race in Oak Ridge on Melton Hill Lake. The Lady Vols earned a total of 10 medals at the race.
To begin the morning, the Tennessee novice team raced in their first competition of the season, racing two eight shells, placing second (20:59.2) and third (21:53.3).
The Big Orange raced two shells in the women's varsity eight against Murray State, Charleston and Chattanooga in a five boat heat. Tennessee claimed two of the top three spots, winning the gold and silver medal. Coxed by junior Harper Lucas, including Emily Thomson, Sarah McAuliffe, Katie King, Tara Montgomery, Aja List, Chandler Frumin, Kaitlyn Wallace and Victoria Florence, Lucas led her shell to a first place finish with a time of 18 minutes and 4.7 seconds. Followed by Tennessee's second shell in the race, Jessie Richardson along with Whitney Wolfe, Kiersten Luginbill, McDarragh Minnock, Natalie Tavares, Allison Toth, Hannah Waddell, Morgan Suffridge, and Courtney Crossley crossed the finish line in 18 minutes and 20.4 seconds. This was the first race of the season where Tennessee raced in eights.
During the afternoon session of racing, Sarah McAullife secured the gold medal slot in the singles event completing the course in 22 minutes and 52 seconds. Tennessee placed in the top six of the eight boat race.
Closing out the day on Melton Hill Lake, UT raced seven pairs against one boat from Charleston. Natalie Taveres and Emily Thomson finished in first place (21:20.9), followed by Courtney Crossley and McDarragh Minnock (21:44.4) and closing out the top-three, Bridget Boland and Aja List crossed the finish line in 22 minutes and 9.3 seconds.
Up next for the Lady Vols is a trip to the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga for two days of racing on November 1-2. The event is the largest head race in Southeast and rivals the Head of the Charles as one of the nations top regattas.
During the 2013 season, Tennessee's Championship 4+ won the the gold medal and for the weekend the Lady Vols brought home a total of three medals.
