BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Lady Vol golf team finished seventh overall at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La., with a three-day card of 305-297-319=921 (+57).
"Today was a really tough day in some challenging conditions," head coach Judi Pavon said. "It was really windy and the greens are firm and fast. We did a pretty good job handling until the last few holes. We just seemed to lose some focus and it really cost us. Late in the day we were in second place but after a poor finish we dropped to seventh."
Senior Erica Popson paced Tennessee through the event, and wrapped up the final round at 9-over par 81 to finish the tournament in a tie for seventh. She posted her fifth top-10 finish this season, and 18th of her career.
Sophomore AJ Newell earned her highest showing this year as she finished in a tie for 12th at 10-over par 226. Sophomore Chessey Thomas followed in a tie for 36th with a three-day 234 (+18) card, and senior Sara Monberg rounded out UT's counted scores at she shot 11-over 83 in the final round for a 54-hole 236 (+20) card.
"Chessey had a good round today, Erica got another top-10 finish and AJ had a very good tournament," Pavon said.
Sophomore Daeun Song, who competed as an individual, finished in a tie for 36th at 18-over, while sophomore Mason Chen placed 58th at 28-over 244.
Through the three-day event, Popson, Thomas and Song all recorded eight birdies apiece.
No. 8 Arkansas held the lead through the entire tournament, taking home the team title with an 899 (+35) card. Tulane (909) came in second while host LSU (912) claimed third-place honors. TCU (916) followed in fourth while Georgia (919) and Wake Forest (919) tied for fifth. Kentucky (924) followed Tennessee in eighth place with Florida State (929) and NC State (930) rounded out the top 10. Missouri (935), Mississippi (941), ULM (966) and UNC-Wilmington (992) wrapped up the final team standings in 11th through 14th spots, respectively.
Arkansas' Emily Tubert took home the individual title, with an even-par 216 total for 54 holes.
"We have a quick turn around before we head to Greensboro, so we need to re-group and improve," Pavon said.
The Lady Vols return to action March 29-31 as they head to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the Bryan National Collegiate.
