2013 General Hackler Final Results
In just his third tournament since joining the Volunteers, Oliver Goss has captured his first individual championship.
"It feels great to get my first collegiate win here at Tennessee," Goss said.
The victory marks the Australian import's first victory on American soil. Goss flirted with the lead through the first two rounds, finishing the first day in second place. On Tuesday, Goss made up the necessary ground by shooting three birdies in his final round to finish with a 71-72-72--215 (-1) and a share of the General Hackler Championship.
"The key this week was my course management," Goss said. "I hit a lot of fairways thanks to my 2-iron, which was important because there can be trouble if you miss the fairway. I did not putt that great, but played solid all-around".
The no. 29 ranked Tennessee team battled with tournament favorites, no. 17 ranked Arkansas and no. 23 ranked Kent State, throughout most of the two day tournament. The Vols finished the first round in second place, but then slipped to third after the second round and were unable to recover.
As a team, the Volunteers finished third carding a 289-300-291--880 (+16). Head coach Jim Kelson had a number of individuals step up in the successful outing. Senior Jay Vandeventer excelled throughout the tournament, finishing fourth and carding a 76-70-71--217(+1). Vandeventer's fourth place finish is his highest finish of the season and the best of his career. His previous best was sixth place at the Yale Spring Opener during his junior year.
Newcomer Thomas Dunne also put in some impressive work, finishing tied for 14th after carding a 70-79-74--223 (+7). Dunne's 14th place finish was his best since finishing tied for eleventh at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
The Tennessee men's golf team was rounded out by Rick Lamb (+10), Mike Nagy (+23) and Brandon Rodgers (+15) who competed as an individual.
Arkansas held a commanding lead throughout most of the tournament. However, Kent State made a late push on the final day to force a spilt championship with the Razorbacks. The General Hackler officials decide that due to time constraints with scheduled flights, a playoff was not possible. Both teams finished with a total score of 873 (+9).
The Vols have participated in the General Hackler Invitational previously in 2011 and 2012, finishing 4th and 12th respectively.
The Tennessee men's golf team returns to action March 24, when they travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the C&F Bank Intercollegiate.
