Goss Continues His Dominance at US Amateur

DENVER, Colo.
On Thursday, Tennessee golfer Oliver Goss locked up two big wins in Match Play to advance to the Round of 8 at the US Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills in Denver, Colo. Goss advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Penn State's Michael Miller in extra holes Thursday morning.
Upon defeating Miller that morning, Goss then faced Bobby Leopold of Cranston, R.I., Thursday afternoon. Leopold turned heads in last year's US Amateur by knocking off the tournament's number one seed. However, Leopold could not hold off the hot Volunteer. Goss started a rally after trailing twelve straight holes to win the Match Play (2 & 1).
Goss now prepares to be one of only eight golfers left at the US Amateur Championship tournament. The new Vol will tee off on Friday at 10:30 a.m. ET against an opponent he will definitely see in the Vols' 2012-13 season. Goss' opponent will be the University of Alabama's Justin Thomas. "We are absolutely thrilled for Oliver right now." UT head coach Jim Kelson said. "We knew he had the potential to perform at this high level. We, here at Tennessee, are very confident in Oliver's ability to compete. I know all of Vol Nation is pulling for him this weekend".

On Wednesday, Goss won his first round of Match Play to advance to the Round of 32 by defeated Texas Christian University's Eli Cole (3 & 1). Goss fell behind early to Cole. However, Goss made a push on the back nine to capture the victory. To see a recap of the Goss-Cole match, click here.For Goss to reach Match Play, he had to make the cut during Stroke Play. The Australian finished qualifying in a tie for 7th place following a second round 4-under par 66. His 72-66 had him at 3-under par. To see Goss' Stroke Play scores, please click here.
Goss, a native of Perth, Australia, was the top Australian qualifier for the US Amateur after finishing tied for 7th place with the aforementioned 3 under par. His solid play at the US Amateur is something that the Volunteers are certainly excited about.
"Oliver is the highest ranked player we have recruited to the University of Tennessee," UT head coach Jim Kelsonsaid. "He certainly possesses all of the tools to excel in intercollegiate golf. We look forward to helping Oliver reach all of his goals and aspirations".
The Perth National Squad member, who is a top 50 points leader in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, is considered one of the finest young golfers in the world. He is the winner of the prestigious 2012 Western Australian Amateur. Goss has complied an extensive resume as an amateur player. He finished tied for second in stroke play portion at the 2012 Australian Amateur ad tied for fifth in 2012 Malaysian Amateur Open.
