The Overtime
The Winning Drive
After holding UAB to a field goal to start the second overtime, the Vols won the game on the very first play of their drive. Junior quarterback Matt Simms hit senior wide receiver Denarius Moore in the end zone with a 25-yard pass.
Simms completed 19-of-34 passes for 245 yards passing and a career-best three touchdowns.
Moore caught two of those touchdown passes. He has caught four touchdowns and run for one this season.
Fast Facts
UT's overtime record: 9-2
Overtime record at Neyland: 5-0
Most recent overtime game was a 30-24 road victory over Kentucky last season. The Vols remained undefeated in four overtime games at home, two of those wins coming against South Carolina (2003 and 2007). Tennessee won a wild 41- 38 six-overtime hom game against Arkansas in 2002.
Neyland Stadium's first overtime game was a 20-17 Tennessee win over the Florida Gators in 1998.
To Note
Anniversary of Gen. Neyland's UT Debut
Today marks the anniversary of Gen. Robert R. Neyland's first game as head coach of the Volunteers. On Sept. 25, 1926, Neyland led Tennessee to a 13-0 victory over Carson-Newman.
The Vols finished 8-1 in 1926, and won the SEC title the next season with an 8-0-1 record.
End of the Home Stand
The victory against UAB marks the final game of the Vols' four-game home run to start the 2010 season. The Vols finished 2-2 during that run.
Tennessee has opened the season with four or more consecutive home games just nine times in school history and three times since 1978.
The Offense
The Longest Play
Junior quarterback Matt Simms completed a pass in the open to sophomore wide receiver Zach Rogers, who ran down the sideline for a 72-yard touchdown.
It was the longest play of the 2010 for the Vols, surpassing Denarius Moore's 58-yard touchdown run against UT Martin.
The play was also the longest play from scrimmage since LaMarcus Coker's 87- yard run at Vanderbilt in 2006.
Additionally, it was the longest passing play for a touchdown since Erik Ainge connected with Robert Meachem for an 84-yard touchdown at Memphis in 2006.
Third Down Converted
David Oku's 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter gave the Vols their first third-down conversion of the game. Prior to that, the Vols were 0-10. Tennessee finished 2-of-15 on third down conversions.
First Quarter Production
The Vols posted 14 points in the first quarter, the most they have scored in the opening quarter all season. They had scored 13 in the first against UT Martin in the season opener.
The Defense
Reveiz Leads Again
Senior linebacker Nick Reveiz led the Vols for the third consecutive game, tying his career best with 14 tackles. He had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 14 yards.
Reveiz became the first Vol to have at least 10 tackles in three consecutive games since Jerod Mayo finished the 2007 season with at least 10 tackles in four games.
Touchdown, Waggner
Sophomore cornerback Prentiss Waggner returned an interception nine yards for a touchdown late in the first half.
Waggner now has two career interceptions, both returned for touchdowns. He took his first career interception 54 yards into the end zone in the season opener against UT Martin.
With the touchdown, Waggner tied the school record of two interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season. Other Vols who completed the feat include Bud Sherrod (1949), Jim Cartwright (1959), Jackie Walker (1970 and 1971), Preston Warren (1988) and Eric Berry (2008).
The Special Teams
Long-Drive Lincoln
Senior placekicker Daniel Lincoln hit a 47-yard field goal in the second quarter to improve to 3-of-3 in field goals 47 yards or longer. He hit a 49-yarder against Florida and had a 48-yard kick the week before against Oregon.
Lincoln has made all seven field goal attempts this season, including one in overtime. As a freshman, he set the school record by starting the season making his first eight field goals.
Snap the Streak
Lincoln's blocked extra point attempt in the second quarter was his first missed PAT since Auburn in 2009. He had made 27 consecutive PATs, including two earlier in the game.
