KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In front of 600 Orange-clad fans on Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team (3-5-0) equaled the mark for the second-most goals in a single match in school history by putting up eight tallies during a commanding 8-0 rout of in-state foe Chattanooga (2-6-0).
In the process UT also recorded its fourth-highest shot total in program annals by out-shooting the Lady Mocs, 43-6, and tied for the second-most assists in a single match with nine. Tennessee held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks and a staggering 24-2 edge on shots on goal. All 23 available players on the Lady Vol roster received playing time during the contest.
Junior forward Emily Dowd posted her team-best fourth and fifth scores of the season, just barely missing a hat trick late in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono and freshman midfielder Sanna Saarinen each tallied their initial two career goals at Rocky Top as well as an assist to total five points apiece during the match. Sophomore defender Ali Hall delivered her first goal of 2010 and an assist, sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison registered her first goal of the campaign and junior forward Chelsea Hatcher, junior midfielder Emily Shore, junior defender Molly Delk, junior forward Ashley Owens, sophomore forward Alexis Owens and freshman midfielder Caroline Brown each were credited with a single assist.
The Tennessee offense was in high gear from the out-set against Chattanooga as senior defender Tanya Emerson fired a shot high at 2:59 and Hatcher had a drive blocked out in front at 4:15.
UTC almost handed the Big Orange a own-goal during the third minute as a clearance from the back by a Chattanooga defender hit the right post/crossbar and traveled over frame for an early corner kick.
The Lady Mocs were dangerous early in the match on the counter-attack, but the Lady Vol defense kept them from getting off any shots at frame.
UT nearly got on the scoreboard just 6:55 in as a long shot from about 35 yards out in the middle of the pitch by Shore hit the crossbar.
With Chattanooga facing shot-after-shot from the Lady Vols, it was only a matter of time before Tennessee broke the scoreless deadlock.
Following saves by UTC goalkeeper Taylor Mangrum on shots from Fisher and Emerson during the 16th and 17th minutes, the Big Orange finally got on the board at 17:48. Off a corner kick by Shore, Hall touched the ball to Bono who headed a shot in near the right post, from approximately six yards out, to make it 1-0.
Bono nearly scored again at 22:38 as her long shot from deep in the middle was saved by a leaping Mangrum and hit off the crossbar.
The Lady Mocs finally managed their first shot of the contest at 25:34 as Kerbi Towry made a run in from the left side but fired well wide left of frame from about 22 yards. Just moments later a shot from Donna-Kay Henry was saved easily by Baird, marking the high-water mark for Chattanooga's offensive attack during the opening 45 minutes.
Tennessee managed its second goal off a set piece (corner kick) at 30:05 as Shore drove a cross into the box. Hatcher headed the ball from the left side of goal to Bono who flicked her own header off the crossbar. The ball rebounded right back into play to Hall, and she headed the sphere past Mangrum from about seven yards out to make it 2-0.
At 31:17 Chattanooga midfielder Kelly Downs received her second yellow card of the match and was promptly sent off via red card, meaning the Lady Mocs were forced to play the remaining 58:43 a woman down.
After Brown barely missed wide left of the post with a shot during the 34th minute, UT managed to nab a commanding 3-0 lead at 38:10. Ashley Owens dribbled the ball near the end line to the right side of the goal. The Murrieta, Calif., native lobbed a cross to the far post where Saarinen was waiting literally at the upright to volley the ball into the twine.
Just 1:17 later, Alexis Owens crossed a ball from deep near the end line on the right side of frame through traffic into the middle where Harrison raced in to slam it home from six yards out and finalize the first half scoring at 4-0, UT.
The Big Orange out-shot the Lady Mocs by a 22-2 total during the opening stanza.
It took just 42 seconds of the second half for the UT advantage to expand to five scores. Saarinen played a beautiful back heel from the middle of the pitch to the left wing to Bono who one-timed the ball into the net from about 16 yards out.
During the 65th minute of action, a long arching pass into the 18-yard box by recent Tennessee roster addition Delk was headed home during a collision with the Chattanooga keeper by Saarinen, marking the Espoo, Finland, native's second goal of the contest.
Dowd managed to finalize the count at 8-0 later in the second half by beating Mangrum on a breakaway from 12 yards out at 76:50 and scoring at 80:41 off a feed from Brown from 13 yards out on the right wing. The Gainesville, Fla., product nearly registered a hat trick during the 87th minute, but Dowd's shot to the far post traveled just a foot wide left of frame.
