KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Locked in a scoreless duel during the second overtime on Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field in Starkville, Miss., a string of passes from Tennessee Lady Vol senior defender Tanya Emerson to junior midfielder Emily Shore to freshman midfielder Caroline Brown resulted in a "golden goal" by Brown at 102:22 as UT (6-6-1, 3-1-1 Southeastern Conference) downed Mississippi State (7-7-0, 0-5-0 SEC), 1-0 (2OT).
The Big Orange out-shot the hosts by a 27-16 count, including 13-7 in shots on goal, and owned a commanding 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
For Brown the goal marked her second of the season and both the first match-winner and "golden goal" of her brief Lady Vol career. Shore tallied her team-leading fourth assist of 2010, while Emerson registered her first assist and point of the campaign. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird made seven saves in improving to 3-1-1 in league play while picking up her second solo SEC shutout and lowering her conference-only goals against average to 0.56.
The Bulldogs recorded the game's first scoring opportunity during the opening few minutes as a Tennessee defender fell down while trying to clear the ball out of the 18 yard box, allowing MSU forward Kat Walsh to find some space. Instead of shooting immediately at goal, she attempted a pass into the middle to teammate Taylor Turnipseed, but UT managed to corral the feed and hammer the sphere out of any danger.
The first shot of the contest for either squad came 9:36 in as junior forward Emily Dowd received a pass in the middle of the 18, turned and fired a roller that was saved easily by MSU keeper Skylar Rosson.
During the 13th minute Walsh fired sharply from about 16 yards out on the left wing, but right to Baird as the redshirt senior keeper made the routine grab.
Tennessee missed a golden opportunity during the 14th minute as a through ball found Dowd with a step on the Mississippi State backline. The Gainesville, Fla., native made a move around the keeper, getting her sprawling on the ground, but didn't shoot immediately. That brief hesitation allowed time for MSU's defense to recover as Dowd's eventual shot traveled wide right of frame.
A feed from Dowd into the middle of the 18 at the 20:19 mark traveled in the direction of junior forward Chelsea Hatcher. The Cincinnati, Ohio, product leapt above the crowd in the middle of the 18 and managed to flick a header on goal that forced Rosson into action once again to make the stop.
Another pass from the left wing to the middle of the 18 by Dowd granted senior forward Anna Fisher the chance to register a shot at 28:55 as her header to the center of frame was corralled by the Bulldog net minder.
A shot by Fisher with 7:20 left in the half was blocked wide right of frame and over the end line for a Lady Vol corner. Shore drilled the ball in from the right side and freshman midfielder Caroline Brown managed a blocked shot during a scrum out front. A collision between UT junior defender Chelsea Kephart and the MSU keeper went the Bulldogs way as the referee signaled for a Lady Vol foul in the box.
With 4:30 remaining in the opening stanza, a long MSU free kick off a UT foul was drilled into the middle. With the sphere bouncing around out front, Mississippi State's Elisabeth Sullivan raced in from behind the play and launched a shot at 40:39 that ventured well over the crossbar.
That proved the last solid chance for either squad during the initial frame as the teams went to the break locked in a scoreless duel. Tennessee out-shot the Bulldogs overall by a 9-6 count, including 6-3 in shots in goal during the opening 45 minutes of action.
Just 30 seconds into the second half, a run by UT senior Julie Edwards up the left wing resulted in an eventual shot by Dowd from 13 yards out that forced a save.
Mississippi State turned the tables, racing right back the other way just seconds later with Walsh forcing a stop by Baird at 45:55.
After Baird managed to get a critical deflection on a promising shot on goal from a sharp angle on the left wing by MSU's Monica Alvarado during the 49th minute, Hatcher followed quickly at the other end by hitting the outside of the left post with a blast from 15 yards out at 48:31.
Tennessee's offense came oh so close to getting on the scoreboard during a 56th minute flurry inside the 18. Hatcher fired a shot that was saved by Rosson, but the ball escaped away from the keeper to the left side of frame. Bono managed to get over and drill a close-range shot that the quickly recovering net minder managed to stop via a deflection. A follow-up drive off the foot of Bono traveled just wide left of the upright as the contest remained scoreless.
Hatcher made a run from the right wing to the middle and missed just high of the crossbar on a shot from about 18 yards out with 26:27 remaining.
MSU had its own scoring chance at 66:08 as Rachel Wannek launched an ambitious drive from about 26 yards out in the middle of the pitch that traveled well high of frame.
With 13:21 remaining in regulation, the Bulldogs threatened as MSU's Tarah Henderson received the ball in some space on the left wing just outside the six-yard box, forcing Baird quickly off her line. The UT keeper raced out and managed to get a touch on the ball to disrupt the Bulldog midfielder. A Tennessee defender then managed to gain control the sphere and clear it out of danger.
A determined run by Hatcher up the right wing during the 81st minute resulted in a cross to the middle. A closely marked Bono raced in from behind and managed a shot, but it traveled wide left of the upright.
A quick shot by Hatcher during the 84th minute from about 16 yards out on the left side seemed to cross up Rosson as the keeper got a hand on the left-footed drive and barely forced it just outside the right post. On the ensuing corner kick, Tennessee battled inside the box but couldn't get off another credited shot at goal before the Bulldogs cleared it out of the area.
Following a UT foul and off a long free kick from deep on the left wing, Baird made a save on a headed shot by Alvarado at 86:27.
Harrison managed a blocked drive off a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining. A late free kick from deep out on the left was taken on frame but wide left by Hatcher as the teams would require overtime to settle things.
Tennessee opened the first extra session with a blocked Dowd shot at 90:20 and then a header by Fisher at 90:35, off a feed from deep out in the middle by senior defender Melissa Speros, which was stopped by MSU's Rosson.
Quickly back the other way, Mississippi State's Sullivan fired high from the right side at 90:53. On the ensuing goal kick, the ball ended up in the Bulldogs' possession and a through ball was delivered just ahead of Sullivan approaching the top of the 18. The pass appeared to be just a little too far out front as Baird raced off her line and managed a sliding kick out of the zone. The Raleigh, N.C., native was shaken up briefly in a collision with Sullivan but remained in the contest.
Later in the first OT, Bono managed a flicked on header that was blocked over the end line for a corner kick. The corner was crossed into the middle, resulting in a scrum of bodies out front. Hatcher managed to get off a sliding shot, but couldn't get much on it in the crowd as Rosson managed a save.
Hatcher broke in from the right wing on goal just 1:30 into the second extra session and fired from 10 yards, but the shot just missed to the outside of the upright and hit tauntingly off the netting.
With 8:06 remaining Dowd blasted a shot off the cross bar from about 16 yards out in the middle that rebounded back into the field of play.
The ball was soon tracked down by Emerson who made a pass to Shore. She delivered a ball over the defense to Brown marked near the left end line. An MSU defender and the keeper made a step up anticipating a cross to the middle, but the Hershey, Pa., native decided to take a shot from the tough angle and buried the ball in the far side netting for the "golden goal."
