KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team (7-6-1, 4-1-1 Southeastern Conference) improved to 5-1-1 over its last seven matches and wrapped up its perfect weekend jaunt through "The Magnolia State" by defeating Ole Miss, 3-1, on a 90-degree Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Miss. The contest was broadcast live on television via Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
The Big Orange received the second consecutive match-winning goal of the trip from freshman midfielder Caroline Brown, the team-leading sixth score of the campaign from junior forward Emily Dowd and an "own goal" during the 19th minute from the Rebels in posting the rousing victory. Brown had previously recorded the match-winner at the 102:22 mark on Friday night during UT's 1-0 overtime triumph at Mississippi State. Sophomore midfielder Kylie Bono tallied an assist on Brown's goal for her 10th overall point over Tennessee's last seven matches.
The Lady Vols out-shot the Red & Blue by a 24-13 count, including 11-7 on shots on goal, and posted a commanding 11-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Tennessee redshirt senior goalkeeper Molly Baird registered six saves during the match in picking up her 15th career victory between the pipes. Her counterpart for the Rebels, Sarah Story, made eight stops while permitting a trio of scores.
"This was a great win today for our team," Lady Vol Head Soccer Coach Angela Kelly said. "Our offense executed very well in the attacking half. Both teams were coming off overtime matches on Friday night, and I was really pleased with the endurance, mentality and overall fitness displayed by our squad. It was also a terrific performance this weekend by freshman Caroline Brown to score both match-winners for us during our trip to Mississippi."
After an early feeling out process over the opening few minutes, a Tennessee foul granted a free kick for the Rebels during the sixth minute of play. A cross to the middle from about 28 yards out on the right wing traveled harmlessly through the traffic out front, however, for a goal kick.
It proved to be Ole Miss that tallied the match's first goal as forward Mandy McCalla broke in free from the right side. She dribbled diagonally in towards the right upright and fought off a last ditch sliding effort from a UT defender to beat Baird from approximately six yards for a 1-0 Rebel advantage.
After sophomore midfielder Amy Harrison fired well wide for Tennessee's initial shot of the match at 13:31, the UM lead nearly became two scores at 14:33 as another long pass ahead found Rebel forward Erin Emerson with a step on the defense. She shot quickly from the right side of goal, forcing Baird to make a diving deflected stop across the goal mouth before it was eventually cleared.
Pressure forced off a cross to the middle during the 19th minute paid vital dividends for the Big Orange. Brown battled in the right corner to win an important one-vs.-one battle and crossed a feed towards Harrison out in front of the right post. That forced a quick and eventually unfortunate decision by the marking Rebel defender as she attempted a quick tip back to her keeper, but it got through for an own goal, tying the scoreboard at 1-1 at 18:41.
Just 4:38 later a terrific through ball up the middle from Bono located Brown with a step on her defender on the right wing. The Hershey, Pa., native managed a quick shot from approximately nine yards to beat UM keeper Sarah Story in a one-vs.-one situation for her third goal of 2010 and second during this weekend's road trip through "The Magnolia State." During the 25th minute junior forward Chelsea Hatcher blasted a free kick that appeared to strike the crossbar before rebounding back into play. A follow-up shot by Brown was saved by Story as the Rebels avoided allowing yet another UT score.
The Tennessee backline came up big at the 27:43 mark of the opening stanza as a pass into the 18 ended up ricocheting around in the middle of a crowd. Tough battles ensued with the only shot allowed by UT being a weak effort by Ole Miss' McCalla from about 10 yards out that rolled slowly into Baird's waiting arms.
Baird came up huge again for the Lady Vols with 8:50 left in the first frame as a shot from near the penalty spot by McCalla was saved by the redshirt senior keeper. The drive got through the goalie's hands, but the Raleigh, N.C., product had enough of a deflection on the tough shot to force it wide of the right post. On the ensuing UM corner kick into the 18, a header from 12 yards out by leaping Ole Miss midfielder Dylan Jordan ventured well high of goal.
With less than two minutes remaining in the half, a through ball found freshman midfielder Sanna Saarinen with some space up the left wing, and the Espoo, Finland, native crossed through the middle over to the right side of frame. Bono raced into the play from behind and fired a shot from about 12 yards that was stopped via a solid diving save by Story.
That proved the last major chance of the half as the squads went to the break with the Big Orange holding a 2-1 advantage.
Right off the opening kick of the second stanza, a long run up the left wing by Saarinen resulted in a cross to the middle. A closely marked Harrison managed a shot at 45:47 from about 10 yards out but forced it over the bar for a goal kick.
The UT offensive pressure continued during the 48th minute, off a corner kick to the middle of the 18, as senior Julie Edwards shot high.
Then 2:02 later Bono forced a Story save on a drive from just wide of the left post, registering Tennessee's 12th shot of the match and fourth over the opening 4:49 of the second half.
Ole Miss continued to make runs up both wings, but numerous crosses to the middle were cut-off pre-emptively on grabs by Baird or cleared out of the 18 by Lady Vol defenders.
The Rebels had a glorious chance in the 58th minute as a give-and-go worked between McCalla and Emerson ended up with the latter breaking in free towards the left upright. Baird cut down the angle and made a tough catch on the eventual blast from about nine yards out.
Meanwhile the woodwork was busy denying the Lady Vols at the other end. At 58:00 junior forward Emily Dowd launched a shot from the top of the 18 that rattled sharply off the crossbar. Then just 1:21 later, on a feed to the middle from the left wing, Bono managed a shot from about eight yards out that also hit off the bar before being cleared out of danger by Ole Miss.
The Tennessee offensive opportunities continued during the 62nd minute of play as a scrum out front of the UM goal, with the orb pin-balling around between players, resulted in potential chances for senior forward Anna Fisher, Hatcher and Harrison.
During the 67th minute an Ole Miss corner ended up requiring another solid stop by Baird in goal. The ball was crossed to the middle from the left side and landed at the feet of McCalla. She turned quickly and fired from near the penalty spot, but UT's net minder proved up to the task, managing to get a leg out to deflect the ball back out into the middle. A follow up shot by the Rebels' Jordan traveled well high of the crossbar as UT maintained its one-goal advantage.
On a 70th minute corner by Ole Miss, McCalla was waiting on the pass at the far post but headed high of frame while attempting to send a shot across goal into the upper right corner.
Brown almost made it 3-1 Lady Vols with 15:45 remaining in regulation as a cross from the right side into the center was headed by the rookie straight up in the air. As the sphere returned to Earth Brown managed to get better purchase on her second header from about 10 yards out, forcing the eighth stop of the match from the Rebel keeper.
Tennessee continued its pressure down the stretch forcing a trio of corner kicks over a stretch from 77:37 through the 84th minute of play.
With approximately 5:30 left in regulation the Rebels forced a corner kick, still trailing by a goal on the scoreboard. On the feed to the back post, UM managed a header on frame but Baird managed to punch the ball out in a crowd in the middle to keep Ole Miss from getting off a quality shot.
In full-on clock-wasting mode, Dowd ended up with the ball off the left side of frame. The Gainesville, Fla., native made a move towards the end line and fired a shot on goal. The blast was high forcing a leap by the Ole Miss keeper, and it hit off her outstretched fingertips before trickling in for the match-sealing score at 87:51.
