Two members of the Tennessee football team were named Freshman All-SEC by the league's coaches, the conference office announced Thursday. The Vols picked up one honor on each side of the ball as offensive tackle Aaron Douglas and middle linebacker Herman Lathers received recognition.
Douglas, from Maryville, started the last nine games of the season and played 95 percent of the total snaps from that point forward. He allowed just 1.5 sacks in more than 700 total plays and was second on the offensive line with 58 knockdown blocks. He also picked up a weekly award from the league this season as he was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week following UT's 56-28 win over Memphis on Nov. 7. He was the only freshman to win the weekly offensive line award this season.
Lathers, from Baton Rouge, La., played in all 12 games and started the last four at middle linebacker after both Nick Reveiz and Savion Frazier were lost for the year with knee injuries. He finished the season fifth on the team in tackles with 40, including one for a loss.
The two selections to the Freshman All-SEC Team give UT a total of seven players honored by SEC head coaches. Junior safety Eric Berry was named first team All-SEC, while senior linebacker Rico McCoy, senior defensive tackle Dan Williams, senior offensive tackle Chris Scott and senior tailback Montario Hardesty were named second-team All-SEC. Williams was a first-team selection by the Associated Press.
