Former Vol Headley Guides Team To Title
September 17, 2007 | Baseball
Former Tennessee baseball player Chase Headley (2004-05) capped an outstanding 2007 season in which he made his Major League debut and was named the Texas League Player of the Year by helping guide the San Antonio Missions to the Texas League Championship this past Saturday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.
Headley logged two hits and an RBI in the season-finale as the Missions (Class AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres) defeated the Springfield Cardinals 11-7.
For the season, the third baseman hit a league-best .330 with 143 hits, 78 RBIs and 20 home runs. He also scored 82 runs and recorded 38 doubles.
During his time at Tennessee, Headley earned the rare distinction of claiming both All-America and Academic All-America honors. He helped lead the Vols to the 2005 College World Series and was drafted that summer by the Padres in the second round.
Headley's Texas League title came just one day after another former Vol, catcher J.P. Arencibia (2005-07), helped his minor-league team capture the New York-Penn League (Class A short-season) title. And yet another former Vol, pitcher R.A. Dickey (1994-96), was named the 2007 Pitcher of the Year in the Pacific Coast League after an outstanding season with the Class AAA Nashville Sounds.
