Inaugural Orange & White World Series Announced
October 01, 2007 | Baseball
Tennessee head baseball coach Todd Raleigh announced the dates, times and format for a new fall intrasquad competition called the Orange & White World Series. In past years, the Volunteers had played a single intrasquad game marking the end of fall practice. Raleigh???s Orange & White World Series, however, takes the form of a best-of-five intrasquad series.
The World Series games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. All games will take place at Robert M. Lindsay Field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
???Simulating actual games is something that really allows you to evaluate where you are as a team,??? Raleigh said. ???This type of fall series is something I???ve done in the past, and I feel like it is a great opportunity for the players to improve. Both teams are going to want to win, and it should be really competitive and fun for the guys as well.???
The Vols will be split into two squads via a draft, with one team coached by infielders coach Bradley LeCroy and the other led by pitching coach Fred Corral. All five games will be played no matter the series outcome.
Fan attendance at the Orange & White World Series games is encouraged, and attendance is free. However, fans should be aware that, due to ongoing construction at the stadium, the netting that has served to protect spectators from foul balls is not currently in place. A limited number of seats are also blocked off, but spectators will still have plenty of good seats to choose from.
Raleigh also announced that there would be no Alumni Game this fall, due mostly to logistics issues associated with the stadium renovations. The game has typically taken place on a Friday night before a home football game, but only two light banks at the stadium are currently operational, making playing at night all but impossible to do safely.
???The Alumni Game is something that is important for the program, it???s important to me and I think it should be a big deal,??? Raleigh said. ???I???m definitely planning on resuming it next year and making it bigger and better than it has been in the past. This year just doesn???t work out because of the construction and lack of lighting. I hate that it worked out that way, but I???m looking forward to welcoming all the former Vols back next fall.???
