The Tennessee athletics department announced Wednesday it is nearing a sellout for the Outback Bowl.
UT ticket manager Joe Arnone said fewer than 400 tickets remain for the Jan. 1 game against Penn State. Tickets can be purchased at the UT athletics ticket office, which is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets also can be ordered online at UTsports.com or by calling 656-1200 or toll-free in Tennessee 1-800-332-VOLS (8657). Tickets for the Outback Bowl are $60.
Last week, the Outback Bowl announced it had sold all tickets that were not provided in team allotments to Tennessee and Penn State.
VOLS FACE BIG CHALLENGE IN PENN STATE DEFENSE
Tennessee took an afternoon break from final exams Wednesday to squeeze in a 90-minute workout at Haslam Field. It was UT's first practice session since Sunday because of finals and came amid excellent December weather conditions.
The Vols, 9-3, are preparing for their Jan. 1 Outback Bowl meeting against Penn State, 8-4, in Tampa, Fla.
"Penn State is a really fine football team and a big challenge for us," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "I'm expecting to finish this season well. I'm expecting the seniors to lead here at the end just like they did against Cal at the start of the season and that we play our best football game against Penn State in the Outback Bowl.
"Today was centered around fundamentals, pad leverage, effort and the things we need to do to be a good team. I was really encouraged about that today. It didn't take us any time to get back into it."
An early look at the Nittany Lions has Fulmer's attention.
"They've got the big back (Tony Hunt), who is a 1,200-plus-yard rusher, they do a good job up front and the receivers are good, too. Defensively, you're talking about the 16th-rated defense in the country and, I think, No. 5 against scoring. They've given up 24 points in the last three ballgames.
"They have a really good front, really good linebackers. You see why they are rated where they are. It's a big challenge for our team and we haven't played a team like them in awhile. It will be huge for us to be able to control the front if we can do that."
Tennessee has practices scheduled daily through Dec. 20, when the team breaks for the holidays. The Vols will scrimmage Saturday night at Neyland Stadium.
