Tennessee golfer David Skinns was selected to compete in the 2005 Palmer Cup at Whistling Straits Golf Club in Kohler, Wis., June 8-9. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played on Whistling Straits' Irish Course (par 72, 7,201 yards).
This will mark Skinns' second appearance in the Palmer Cup. He competed in 2003 going 2-1-1 to help give the European team a 14-10 victory over the United States at Kiawah Island Club's Cassique course in Charleston, S.C.
A senior from Lincoln, England, he recently claimed the SEC individual golf championship. This marked the first time since 1990 a Vol had claimed this title. He leads the team in scoring average with a 72.41. He has four top 10 finishes for the year with the highlight coming at the SEC Championships where he took top honors with a 72-70-68--210. The other top finishes came at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate (74-70-72--216) in a tie for 10th, the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate (73-77-67--217) in seventh and the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions (72-69-70--211) in a tie for eighth.
Skinns joins the European squad made up of Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State, Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, Kalle Edberg and Scott Jamieson of Augusta State, Pablo Martin and Alex Noren of Oklahoma State and Steve Tiley of Georgia State. The team will be coached by Magnus Grankvist of the Swedish Golf Federation and assisted by David Llewellyn of Wales.
The Americans lead the series with their European counterparts 4-3-1. The Palmer Cup returns to the United States after being held at Ballybunion Golf Club in Ireland in 2004.
Skinns and the 15th-ranked Volunteers now wait to find out their destination for one of the three upcoming regionals. The regional sites are the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville for the East Regional, Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., for the Central Regional and the Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif., for the West Regional.
