The 13th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team makes its annual trip to Statesboro, Ga., to compete in the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational, March 19-20, at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72, 6,945 yards). The Vols are looking to claim their second straight and fourth tournament title of the 2004-05 season. They are coming off a victory at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational in Los Angeles.
The tournament, which attracts some of the nation's top teams, features 11 from the Golfweek top 25. The ranked teams include No. 3 Georgia, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Southern California, No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 16 Augusta State, No. 17 Duke, No. 18 South Carolina, No. 19 Clemson, No. 22 and host Georgia Southern and No. 23 Minnesota. Other teams competing include LSU, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Ohio State.
Head coach Jim Kelson has put together a solid lineup to compete against some of the nation's top talent. Leading the team is senior Ross McGowan. McGowan enters the tournament fresh off his highest finish as a Vol at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational in second. He stands third on the team in scoring average with a 73.27. He also has another top-10 finish to his credit at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions in a tie for third.
In the second spot is junior Lloyd Campbell. Campbell, who is having his best season to date as a Vol, leads the team in scoring average with a 72.72. He has recorded 18 rounds of par or better and has three top 10 finishes. His most recent top 10 came at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational in a tie for sixth. The other two occurred at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate (10th-t) and Tournament of Champions (3rd-t).
Senior David Skinns anchors the No. 3 spot. Skinns is second on the team in scoring average with a 72.76. He leads the team with nine rounds of par or better and has three top 10 finishes. He recorded the top-10 finishes at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate (10th-t), Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate (seventh) and Tournament of Champions (eighth-t).
Rounding out the Vol contingent are freshmen Philip Pettitt and Charlie Ford in the four and five positions, respectively. Both Pettitt and Ford have made contributions in their young Volunteer careers. Pettitt holds a scoring average of 73.67, while Ford has a 73.33. Pettitt's top finish of the year came at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate where he took top individual honors. Ford recently competed in the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate as an inidividual, finishing tied for eighth.
This will mark the 23rd year Tennessee has competed in Georgia Southern's event. Former Vol Eric Rebmann won the individual championship in 1985, carding a three-round score of 205 (11-under-par).
The tournament is a 54-hole format with 36 holes played on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. A link to live scoring is available at www.UTsports.com.
