Tennessee golfer Philip Pettitt was named the SEC Player of the Week for his performance at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate. Pettitt, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., claimed top honors at the tournament, which was his first as a Vol.
Pettitt fired a 69-72-67--208 to win the individual portion of the tournament by two strokes over Anthony Kim of Oklahoma, and has a scoring average of 69.33. Pettitt's recent accomplishment also helped him to garner national recognition as the player of the week by Golfworld magazine.
The Vols swept the tournament with its first team championship since spring of 2002 when it won the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational. As a team, Tennessee carded a 282-292-280--854 to win the program's first season-opening tournament since claiming the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions title in the fall of 1993.
The fifth-ranked Vols return to action Oct. 11-12, when they compete in the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla.
