TENNESSEE POSTGAME NOTES
Tennessee vs. Auburn -- Oct. 2, 2004 -- Neyland Stadium -- Knoxville, Tenn.
Noting the Game
· Tennessee dropped to 3-1 (1-1 SEC). Auburn remains undefeated at 5-0 (3-0 SEC).
· The Vols entered the game ranked No. 10 by the Associated Press and No. 8 by USA Today/ESPN. Auburn was Nos. 8 and 9 in the polls.
· Tennessee will return to action Saturday against Georgia at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
· Tonight's attendance was 107,828.
Tennessee-Auburn Series
· Auburn leads the series 24-21-3 against the Vols, and UT leads the series 14-8-2 in games played in Knoxville.
· Auburn won last season's meeting 28-21 at Jordan-Hare Stadium to snap UT's four-game winning streak in the series.
· This is the first time the Tigers have won back-to-back games against Tennessee since winning three straight from 1982-84.
· The 26-26 tie in 1990 was the last time UT and Auburn were both ranked in the top 10 for the match-up.
· Either Auburn or UT has entered the game ranked since 1982, when neither team was ranked and Auburn won 24-14.
· In nine of UT's 11 SEC championship seasons, the Vols have beaten the Tigers, with the exception being the 1990 tie and 1940, 1946 and 1951 seasons in which the teams did not play.
· The last time Auburn came to Knoxville, Tennessee shut out the Tigers 24-0 in 1999.
· This was Auburn's first win in Neyland Stadium since a 37-14 victory in 1983. Auburn and UT also tied 20-20 in 1987 in Knoxville.
Head Coach Phillip Fulmer
· Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer's record is 116-29 in 13 years with the Vols.
· Fulmer now has a 3-2 record against Auburn, including a win in the 1997 SEC Championship Game.
· Fulmer's record vs. SEC Western Division teams is now 29-8.
Noting the Offense
· Freshman quarterback Erik Ainge made his first career start tonight.
· Gerald Riggs Jr. 26-yard rush in the third quarter was his career long. His previous career long was 20 versus UNLV this season and last season versus Fresno State.
· Sophomore wide receiver Jayson Swain made his first career start tonight.
· Sophomore fullback Cory Anderson's 2-yard touchdown reception was his first career touchdown. He becomes the 12th different Vol to score a touchdown this season.
· Ten different Vols caught passes for a second consecutive game.
Noting the Defense
· Freshman cornerback Roshaun Fellows had first career interception. It was the fifth interception of the season for the Vols.
· The Vols recorded one sack tonight. Junior linebacker Jason Mitchell and junior defensive end Parys Haralson combined on the sack.
· The Vols had nine tackles for loss: junior linebacker Jason Mitchell (2), sophomore defensive end Turk McBride (2), junior defensive end Jesse Mahelona (2), junior linebacker Omar Gaither (1), junior defensive end Parys Haralson (1), and freshman defensive end Antonio Reynolds (1).
· Junior linebacker Omar Gaither had a forced fumble.
· Senior linebacker Kevin Burnett had a fumble recovery. Burnett also recovered a fumble in the season's lidlifter against UNLV.
· Junior free safety Jason Allen led the Vols with 14 tackles including 10 unassisted.
· Kevin Burnett and Jason Allen entered the game with 9.7 tackles per game, tops in the SEC.
Fast Facts
· Tennessee's four opponents have scored first in each game this season.
· Tennessee has not scored on its opening possession of the game or the second half this season.
· Tennessee trailed 31-3 at the half. This was the largest halftime deficit since trailing Florida 35-6 Sept. 21, 1996. Florida eventually won the game 35-29.
· Corey Larkins returned three kickoffs for 52 yards. He now has 1148 career kickoff returns yards. He entered the game with 1096 and his yardage tonight moved him into third all-time at Tennessee. He passed Dale Carter (90-91) who had 1130 yards.
· Tennessee's six turnovers were the most since six versus Alabama Oct. 26, 2002. The Vols lost 34-14 here at Neyland Stadium.
· Auburn had five interceptions tonight which tied the record for most interceptions by an opponent. Duke had five interceptions in 1949 in a 21-7 win in Knoxville.
· Freshman quarterback Erik Ainge tied the mark for the most thrown interceptions in a game with four. Three other Vols have thrown four interceptions in a game the last time was by Peyton Manning against Florida in 1996. The two others were Jeff Francis (Alabama 1987) and Bobby Scott (Auburn 1970).
· Senior strong safety Junior Rosegreen had four interceptions which tied the SEC record for most interceptions in a game held by Mississippi State's Jack Nix (Arkansas 1939).
