Tennessee men's golf standout David Skinns has been selected as a member of the 2003 Palmer Cup team for Europe. The competition between the United States and Europe will be held July 10-11 in Charleston, S.C. at The Kiawah Island Club's Cassique course.
Skinns, a native of Lincoln, England, is a sophomore for the Vols. For the 2003 season he leads the team in stroke average with a 71.91, with 16 rounds of par or better and six top 10 finishes. He has three second-place finishes coming at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, Seminole Intercollegiate and North Carolina State Intercollegiate.
His freshman season he was named the Softspikes National and Southeastern Conference freshman of the year. He ended his freshman season with a stroke average of 71.83 and six top 10 finishes. He also claimed an individual title at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational.
Head men's golf coach Jim Kelson is excited for Skinns and the chance he will have this summer to compete in such a prestigious event.
"Being named to the Palmer Cup is a tremendous honor for David," Kelson said. "He is extremely excited and honored to represent Europe in such a prestigious national event. This is one of the top events in international competition and is continuing to grow in status. The players from both the U.S. and Europe are among the best."
The competition between the two teams include fourball and singles match play on July 10, with foursome matches and single matches on July 11.
This marks the seventh meeting in the Palmer Cup, with the U.S. holding a 4-1-1 series lead.
