Head coach Jim Kelson announced the 2002-03 schedule for his men's golf team. The schedule includes return trips to seven tournaments the Vols competed in last year, four new tournaments and the Southeastern Conference Championships. Kelson thinks this year's schedule will be very challenging, after adding some new tournaments to the slate.
"I think that this year's schedule is second to none in terms of quality of the events and the courses," Kelson said. "We are going to do a couple of new tournaments this year such as the trips to Hawaii and Los Angeles."
UT opens the fall portion of the schedule at The Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn., from Sept. 14-15 at The Ridges Golf Club. The Vols then travel to Dalton, Georgia, for the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate Sept. 27-29 at The Farm Golf Course. After a one-year absence, the Vols make a return-trip to the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla., Oct. 14-15. The tournament will be held at Old Memorial Golf Course.
The fourth tournament of the fall will be the Vols' own Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. The tournament returns to Holston Hills Country Club Oct. 21-22. The teams competing in this year's event include the College of Charleston, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia State, LSU, Mississippi State, North Carolina at Wilmington, South Alabama, Tennessee, UT Chattanooga, Tulane, Vanderbilt and Virginia Commonwealth. UT will look to defend its 2001 title after winning the tournament with scores of 287-278-276--841.
The Vols conclude the fall schedule with a trip to Hawaii to compete in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Kahuku, Hawaii November 4-5. The tournament will be held at the Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club.
"This is the first time we have gotten to go to Hawaii since I have been here," Kelson said. "This will serve as a great recruiting tool, as well as a way of saying thank you to our seniors for all of their hard work."
Tennessee opens its spring slate February 10-11 in New Orleans, Louisana at the Tulane Invitational at English Turn Country Club. A week later Tennessee competes at Sawgrass Golf and Country Club in the always-competitive Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Jacksonville, Florida, Feb. 17-18. To begin the month of March, the Vols will travel west to Los Angeles, Calif., to participate in the Cleveland Golf/USC Southwestern Invitational, hosted by the University of Southern California March 3-4.
"The USC tournament is being played at North Ranch Country Club, which is a magnificent course," Kelson said. "This will give us an opportunity to face some of the West Coast schools that we don't get to see very often."
The Florida State Seminole Intercollegiate is the next tournament for the Vols from March 10-11 in Tallahassee, Fla. at Golden Eagle Country Club. The Vols then travel to Georgia for their next three tournaments. The first being the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational March 22-23 in Statesboro, Georgia, at Forest Heights Country Club. The second will be the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, where UT is the defending champion. Sophomore David Skinns is also the defending individual champion. Forest Hills Golf Club serves as the setting as the Vols attempt to claim their second consecutive title April 5-6 in Augusta. The final regular season tournament for Tennessee is the SEC Championships. For the third year in a row, the tournament is being played at The Seaside Course in Sea Island from April 25-27.
The NCAA Regionals are from May 15-17. The East Regional site has yet to be determined, with the Central Regional being held at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas, and the West Regional at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. The NCAA Championships will be held from May 28-31 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
