Vols Split Doubleheader With LSU

Knoxville, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Volunteers split a doubleheader with No. 23 LSU at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, taking game one, 2-1, before the Tigers overcame a 4-0 deficit to post a 16-4 victory in game two.
Jordan Czarniecki's two-run single in the eighth inning lifted Tennessee (24-24, 9-14 SEC) to a 2-1 victory over the LSU in the first game.
Ben Riley (5-2) tossed 8 1/3 innings for the win, allowing one run on a Sean Barker's home run leading off the seventh as he held the Tigers (32-16, 13-9 SEC) to four hits.
Jeffery Terrell picked up his sixth save as he recorded the final two outs, getting Matt Heath to ground into a bases loaded double play to preserve the win.
Lane Mestepey (9-3) took the loss in the complete game effort as he gave up one hit through seven innings, before the Vols scored two runs on three hits in the decisive eighth.
The win also gave head coach Rod Delmonico 516 career victories, moving him into seventh place on the SEC's all-time wins list, passing Auburn's Paul Nix.
In game two, LSU erupted for 16 runs on 24 hits as it rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 16-4 win to salvage a split.
Barker went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a home run and four RBI, while Heath atoned for himself by going 5-for-6 with a double and one RBI.
Trailing 4-2, following two solo home runs from Eric Wiethorn and Aaron Hill in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, the Tigers broke the game open with six runs each in the seventh and eighth innings when they sent 19 men to the plate and belted out 12 hits. The tacked on two more in the ninth on four hits for final 16-4 tally.
Barker tied the game 4-4 with a two-run home run in the seventh before the Tigers mounted a four-run two-out rally capped by J.C. Holt's two-run single in taking an 8-4 lead.
LSU rapped out seven more hits in the eighth in plating six more runs for a 14-4 advantage. The first five hitters in the inning all collected hits, including RBI doubles from Barker and Dustin Hahn.
Brian Wilson (7-3) picked up win as he overcame a rough first inning in which he allowed four runs on four hits. He gave up just three hits the rest of the way as he worked eight innings with 11 strikeouts and four walks. Jason Vargas worked the ninth.
Terrell (4-7), who struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings, took the loss. He was roughed up for five runs on 10 hits, including all three home runs.
Relievers Joey Andrews and Brian St. Jean faired little better as they were touched for 11 runs on 14 hits in 2 1/3 innings. Andrews gave up nine runs on 11 hits in 1 1/3, while St. Jean pitched the ninth.
Tennessee got four hits in the first inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Matt Sternberg capped in the frame with a two-run single, while Czarniecki drove in Nick Crowe who led off with a triple for the first run. Czarniecki would later scored on Brandon Hopkins' base hit to left.
