Knoxville, Tenn. -- Matt Sternberg and Hal Bibee each homered as the Tennessee Volunteers posted their ninth consecutive non-conference win, 7-2, over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Four pitchers -- Jeffery Terrell, Brian St. Jean, Rob Fitzgerald and Beau Massey -- combined to hold the Eagles to three hits. All three hits came in the fifth where the Golden Eagles plated their two runs on RBI singles by Jake Allen and Carlos Martin.
Terrell (3-6), who was designated to throw four innings, was unhittable as he faced the minimum 12 hitters, striking out six for the win. David Jackson (1-2) took the loss in two innings of work for Tech, which fell to 20-20.
Sternberg got the evening started as he blasted a 410-foot home run, his third of the season, to straightaway center field to put the Vols up 1-0 in the second.
Tennessee then broke the game open in the third as it plated three runs on three hits, including an RBI double by Sternberg that followed a run scoring single by Walter Sevilla and an executed double steal for a 4-0 lead.
A three-run home run by Bibee, his third, highlighted the seventh as the Vols added insurance runs for a 7-2 lead.
Tennessee takes on the No. 6 Mississippi Rebels in a three-game series, Apr. 26-28 in Oxford, Miss.
