Knoxville, Tenn. - On a cold and windy day at Lindsey Nelson Stadium the Eastern Michigan Eagles swooped down from the north and took a 5-0 decision over the Tennessee Volunteers in the first of three games.
Two Volunteer errors and timely hits by Eastern Michigan, including a 3-for-4 day from Greg Anglin, helped propel the Eagles to their season-opening win. Tennessee fell to 3-7 for the first time since 1972.
Joe Linde (1-0) kept the Tennessee hitters off balance as he scattered three hits in the complete game effort. He overcame some early inning wildness when he walked three and hit one in the first four innings to finish with six walks and six strikeouts, including the final two hitters.
Jeffery Terrell (1-1) extended his hitless innings streak to 12 before Anglin doubled in the fourth.
Terrell started strong by striking out five of the first eight batters he faced before finishing with a season-high nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He also helped his cause by picking two runners off first base.
Joey Andrews provided stellar relief, retiring all seven batters he faced, striking out four.
Hunter Rigsby left the game with a sprained left ankle in the fifth inning after getting run over at first base by Chad Jenkins on a sacrifice bunt that scored Brent Olivier who reached a fielding error by Chris Heath for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles broke the game open in the sixth as they plated three runs on four hits for a 4-0 advantage. The rally was ignited by Ryan Goleski's RBI double followed by a sacrifice fly and an Olivier single.
Eastern Michigan added one more in the seventh on the second Tennessee error for a 5-0 lead.
