KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The eighth-rated University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team battled injury as well as No. 49 Brigham Young University on Wednesday in the Goodfriend Tennis Center and emerged victorious for the fourth match in a row. Co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick opted not to play senior Kim Gates and freshmen Breanna Kray and Majen Immink after each were bothered by nagging injuries during the pre-match warm-up.
The injuries forced UT to shift players into different positions and scramble to find a No. 3 doubles tandem, but when all was said and done, the Lady Vols took a 6-1 triumph. Tennessee had employed nine different lineups in the first 10 matches of the season and Wednesday's injuries brought on the 10th arrangement from Patrick and Hahn-Patrick.
"Our veterans players took care of business after we were forced to shift some people around," Patrick said. "Our No. 1 and 2 doubles teams were awesome. We still need to work on our infamous No. 3 pairing. Hopefully if we get the injured players healthy, a team will come together."
UT's tandem of Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland captured the first match with an 8-1 triumph over Lindsay Ferrell and Lu Oswald at No. 2. Agnes Wiski and Vilmarie Castellvi, currently ranked No. 45, took the No. 1 match with an 8-3 decision over Brooke Beverly and Dominique Reynolds to clinch the doubles point for UT. The last minute pairing of Brooke Cordell and Ashley Robards, who were playing together for the first time, fell to Liza Khovdoiarova and Nicole Schneider in the final doubles outing.
In singles action, the co-coaches flip-flopped their No. 1 and 2 players, sending Castellvi out in the top spot with Ojeda playing on court 2. Both were victorious as Ojeda made quick work of Beverly with a 6-1, 6-3 win and Castellvi escaped with a 6-1, 7-6 triumph to put UT up 3-0. Wiski clinched the match for Tennessee when she dealt Oswald a 6-1, 6-4 setback in the No. 3 slot, one position ahead of her normal place in the lineup. Cleveland, who had settled in at the No. 6 slot in previous matches, got the start at No. 4 and came from behind to take a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Renyolds.
The Lady Vols improve to 8-3 with the win, while the BYU falls to 2-5. Tennessee will return to the courts of the Goodfriend Tennis Center on Sunday when it meets Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina at 1 p.m. The 10th-rated Tar Heels boast a deep team and feature the No. 11 ranked doubles pairing of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, as well as two players ranked in the Top 100.
