Mississippi State Edges Vols 4-3
April 30, 2000 | Baseball
Starkville, Miss. (April 30) - Jamie Rock's double in the bottom of the 11th inning drove home Ty Martin with the winning run as the Mississippi State Bulldogs posted a 4-3 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers before a crowd of 5,603 at Dudy Noble Field.
Mark Freed pitched nine innings for the Bulldogs in a no-decision, but it was Steven Dowe (3-0), who worked a perfect 11th inning, picking up the win.
Jamie Bennett (8-3) suffered the loss in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
With two Kris Bennett steals in the fifth inning, the Vols broke Vanderbilt's SEC record for stolen bases in a season with their 183rd. The Commodores stole 182 during the 1989 season. Tennessee stole six bases on the day to push its season total to 185.
Mississippi State improved to 33-12 and 14-7 in the SEC, while Tennessee fell to 35-10 and 7-15 in the league.
A two-out double by Jeff Christensen down the left field line and a subsequent steal of third help set the table for Jeff Baumtrog's opposite field hit to right giving the Vols a 1-0 lead in the second.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth without the benefit of a base hit when with two out they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Matthew Maniscalco drew a walk off Vol reliever Devon Nicholson to score Jamie Rock with the tying run.
The Vols went up 3-1 in the seventh on back-to-back RBI singles from Bennett and Chris Burke, but the Bulldogs loaded the bases on three straight one-out walks in the bottom of the frame and tied it on an RBI single by Jamie Rock and Brian Terry's sacrifice fly.
Tennessee will next be in action at home, Tuesday, May 2 against Tusculum College at 3 p.m.
