Knoxville, Tenn. (May 2) - The Tennessee Volunteers (36-20) got home runs from Jeff Christensen, Ryan Case and Ryan Moffett while stealing nine bases as they ran their way to a 9-2 victory over the Division II Tusculum College Pioneers (20-29).
Moffett drove in a game-high three runs as he was one of four Vol hitters with two hits on the day.
Jordan DeJong (5-3) picked up the win, while reliever Marlyn Tisdale held the Pioneers in check as he struck out seven in four shutout innings. Will Curtiss worked the ninth to close out the game.
Brad Schmittou (5-7) took the loss as he gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
After the Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Trevor Adams' single that plated Joe Davis who tripled to lead off the inning, the Vols took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a triple by Justin Parker and a double by Moffett. With the triple, Parker became Tennessee's career leader in triples with 12, breaking Todd Helton's mark.
Christensen's 10th home run and an error gave the Vols a 4-1 lead after six, while Case's second home run of the season, a sacrifice fly by Brandon Hopkins and a error put the Vols up 7-1 in the seventh.
Moffett's two-run blast came in the eighth as Tennessee built a 9-1 lead. The Pioneers pushed their second run across in the ninth when pinch runner Mike Klossner stole third and scored on a throwing error by Tennessee catcher Hal Bibee.
Tennessee plays host to the Vanderbilt Commodores in a three-game series beginning Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 2 p.m.
